It would be nice if that 3 months refresh requirement could be removed. I still have no idea how this helps to prevent piracy in any way...

I finally stopped using it. Once I buy it, leave me alone. That's why I avoided Roland's "lifetime" stuff too. No more plugins you have to keep dealing with for a lifetime.

I have no idea for sure why they have it, and I too wish it wasn't there... but...
From their perspective it may have at least one useful purpose.
Say I sell my Avenger license (not planning to), what apart from being an honest human prevents me from continue using it on the computer(s) I already have it installed on?
If it never checks back if I am suppose to have this license still involved. This way I can use it for at most 90 days still.

If I decide to live in a country cabin off the grid creating music, I want my plugins to still work.

Well, once and a while you will change the computer or some component in it, and then it would stop to work, due the hardware fingerprint. So even if you would continue to use it, it would be very unreliable and not smart to use it, at some point your project won't work anymore.

Also they could then add some "unregister" workflow instead, if you want to sell it, so you have to go online only to unregister it. But I think due the hardware fingerprint, the problem is neglectable.

The hardware fingerprint for example could include the major version number of the os, Apple updates their oses every year (very annoyingly).
