Tried a bunch of resonance taming plugins. Came closest to grabbing Baby Audio Smooth Operator, but honestly I think I get the best results from a combination of TEOTE (for general cleanup/sounding better) and CraveEQ (for the dirtier jobs).

I’m going to try and force myself to take time over mastering for releases.
Until recently I was of the mindset to always create, record and release tracks inside a day in order to get things done and not get lost in a fog of indecision over the 2000+ plugins and god knows how much hardware I could use instead. That was when I knew stuff would only end up on Soundcloud or YouTube, but now I’m releasing stuff that’ll be on Spotify, Tidal etc it feels like I should make more of an effort to add in a mastering phase especially to compare how things sound on different devices. The track I released most recently has a couple of bad low frequency humps that I never noticed as I’d only listened on headphones!
So, new workflow plan is never release a track the same day it’s recorded, sleep on it a day or three and listen with fresh ears, but only mix stems, try to bounce everything and stick to that at least.

Completed a new tune that I think will make it on to the next CD.
Unless of course, I hate it next week.....

Wheeled out some hardware synths I hadn't played with for a while thanks to stupid heat.
Started making a cover of a Flaming Lips song. Not completely happy with the vocal, it starts too flat, drums were just a bare motorik groove in XO so I'd like to try some Superior Drummer options, thinking of adding in a 303 for a bleepy bass.
Want to add some hands on variation on the synths as it records each track and a shit load of effects for psychedelic wobble.
Most of the basics of the track are there though.

Trying to get better basic DI guitars and amp sim results. Been trying different setups, pedals and amp sims.
Audio Box Noodling
Thought I'd try a Presonus Audio Box and the Ownhammer BAE73 Nebula programs, I enjoyed the guitar tones when noodling (gratuitous fretboard w4nkery, pass me a tissue). Guitar Rig 4 sounded better than using the Hi-z on a MOTU Traveler MKI (via a ADAT to RME HDSP 9632). Might it be the progress in audio tech and time to upgrade the audio interface and PC?
AMD 8350 Eight-Core @4000 MHz
16 GB OF ram
Samsung Evo SSD
HDD audio drive
1 instance of Voxengo Teote (x1 oversampling) brought pops, clicks and playback issues, this with the Audio Box USB. I enjoyed the conversion, but being used to a PCI sound card, these issues were a drawback to creativity.
Eventually, the track changed from a clearer mix to a muddier mix and deviated from the original recording too much. This was after using algorithmic EQ. My ears prefer Nebula and Acustica’s offerings for clarity. Also, I’m sh*t at mixing.

I've spent the last half hour of precious "studio" time staring into space wondering how to manage a little problem. In an unusual fit of selflessness I said I'd record my 9 year old daughter covering a trite Camila Cabello dirge. As it turns out, she meant her _and_ her friends so it looks like I'll have 3 or 4 of the little beasts invading my privacy!
My room is set up for guitars and my innovative grunting / mewling / yodelling vocals not for a girl group. I do have a cricket bat to keep them away from the expensive stuff and I suppose the sharp / hot / toxic stuff will take care of itself.
My dilemma is in the final product. If I record them as they really sound the girls will undoubtedly be heartbroken and I'll be hiding from angry parents on the school run (not to mention facing the wrath of Mrs Resynthesis which will know no bounds). On the other hand, if I make them sound too good, they might want to come back.
Has anybody faced this problem? I'm too old for the Foreign Legion btw.

No, but I suppose you could invest in an interface and DAW for those in need, and leave them to it. Sometimes youth has far greater creativity that's better not stifled. They also learn from YT, etc.resynthesis wrote: Sun Aug 21, 2022 12:16 am Has anybody faced this problem? I'm too old for the Foreign Legion btw.
Presonus offer their Artist DAW with their interfaces. Other companies do this too, it usually seems to Ableton Lite.

She's used Audacity a bit on her laptop but she wants the full thing this time - backing tracks, harmonies, etc. Don't think she's quite ready for Reaper yet but she'll get it eventually.

FL Studio may be a friendlier intro DAW than Reaper
If she had an ipad then Garageband would be the obvious choice.

I wouldn't recommend Reaper to starters.resynthesis wrote: Sun Aug 21, 2022 9:01 pm She's used Audacity a bit on her laptop but she wants the full thing this time - backing tracks, harmonies, etc. Don't think she's quite ready for Reaper yet but she'll get it eventually.
I tried Reaper and sold it, I found it not as user friendly as Studio One, a creativity killer for me.
My analogy from my experience using Reaper is like, "gasping for a cigarette and having to roll one wearing boxing gloves* (I no longer smoke)

I sold a bunch of Behringer monosynths and bought a Push 2. Best sale/buy ever. Push is f**king amazing!

A bit more beta testing of ____________________
I put Befaco Bananuts on all the output jacks in my modular, except ones with very clear shading around the output jacks already. Red for "primary" outputs and gold for other outputs, to help distinguish things. I should have gotten just a few more gold ones, but it's fine.
The red ones look really sharp on Make Noise black panels and on Xaoc panels. Not bad on Noise Engineering black panels either. They don't look as good on some others, but they do what I wanted 'em to.
Got in a bit of bass practice and realized just how good the effects in JamOrigin Midi Bass can be. "Deep Expressor" is pretty cool, and distortion -> amp -> cab sounds better to me than anything I got out of Guitar Rig. Maybe because I already had a compressor in front of it though, so I should experiment some more.
