Need? One. I would not limit myself to one, though.

One, honestly.

But I like a little variety, and I like to pretend that different soft-synths excel at different things.

I know fully well I'd be perfectly fine with just one, and use third-party, or stock DAW fx/midi fx to make it do whatever I want.

they sound like smart folk, so are probably correct.

I think I need exactly 29.
That's pretty well the limit of my MIDI and USB capability. An old 6-way MIDI patchbay and 2 X 10-way USB hubs and one of the MIDI connections goes to an old Kenton device which can control 4 CV synths. After that it becomes problematic getting them to talk to each other...

...unless I get a new laptop that has more USB ports. Might be able to push it up to 39 then, as 29 seems a bit stingy to me. TBH I don't know how I manage with so few synths, I have barely enough synths to occupy all of my fingers.

Probably Behringer Neutron + Proton.
Unless their Jupiter or VCS3 comes out in the meantime...

If the JT-Mini I used the other day is any indication, the JT-16 is going to be fantastic.

Look at Hans Zimmer, then think about your question again! It depends how good you are at programming synths.

What does Hans Zimmer have to do with how many synths I need? Even if I knew how many synths Hans Zimmer needs, I can very safely say with absolute certainty that Hans Zimmer's needs are utterly different to mine.

Must admit that a cut down Jupiter that costs tuppence does appeal. I could buy 8 of them and save myself the wait...

I can't unhear it. Suddenly, I'm no longer satisfied with plugins or even most real analogs. Terribly, terribly limited, though. Every mode except Unison is useless.
