Maybe now is a good time to think about switching? Steinberg has just launched its summer sale. Only €209 for a “competitive crossgrade” to Cubase Pro 14. Tempting... Not that I urgently need new features, but one of my best music buddies uses Cubase, and why continue to bet on a horse that isn't dead yet, but is struggling?

I am nowhere near thinking about switching. Did the Steinberg thing for years. That experience was how I ended up on Studio One.Crossinger wrote: Wed Sep 03, 2025 7:12 pm Maybe now is a good time to think about switching? Steinberg has just launched its summer sale. If things continue to look glum - I will simply sit tight on a long term perpetual license. V7.22 does everything I need it to do right now - certainly not complaining about the status quo.
But I am getting a tad frosted about handing over money for an annual update schedule that was branded as being "major new features in your hands faster" but then basically getting "jazz" fonts, presets for existing (old) plugins and yet another rompler - and calling those "new" features".
I gave the crew the benefit of the doubt back on Oct 9, 2024 - and basically said "Here's another $149 - show me whatcha got".
While the "year of updates" is not quite over yet - can't really say that was money well spent.

Exactly, they basically gaslighted us and made it seem like the new model was more "efficient" and there would be more regular updates. Yet, the exact opposite has happened.Vocalpoint Studios wrote: Wed Sep 03, 2025 7:30 pm But I am getting a tad frosted about handing over money for an annual update schedule that was branded as being "major new features in your hands faster"

AND - for bug fixes as well. I envisioned (mistakely as well) a renewed effort to flight out faster builds where say - 3-5 bugs were fixed, tested and a new version shipped out every month or so.thievedletter wrote: Wed Sep 03, 2025 9:01 pmExactly, they basically gaslighted us and made it seem like the new model was more "efficient" and there would be more regular updates. But even that fell right back into the usual pattern. Radio silence for like 8 weeks and then the same sort of "maintenance" release as we always got circa v6 (and prior) - like this "action packed " package from Dec 4, 2024:
Version 7.0.2 Release Notes (December 4, 2024):
The following issues have been fixed:
● Channel strips and track controls desaturated when colorize option is active
● Colorization cannot be applied to certain channel types
● Korean EULA missing
I mean - why even bother wasting time releasing this? None of these are showstoppers and none brought any sense of "WOW - glad they finally addressed that" to the table.
Definitely feeling worried about where this is going. And now it's September. And my annual updates expire on Oct 10....tick tick tick...

Definitely not holding my breath, this is the quietest year ever.

Did the original developers ( who also developed cubase/nuendo ) for Studio One leave ? It just seems like Presonus has lost a major unique aspect of what MADE them original and great in the beginning. I'm also not a fan of these last updates and the gaslighting they did in 2024.

I think ever since Fender acquired them S1 has started going downhill.trusampler wrote: Wed Sep 03, 2025 10:36 pm Did the original developers ( who also developed cubase/nuendo ) for Studio One leave ? To respond to another post on the previous page:
What would I consider a major update?
Browser update: Browser is easily the worst in any DAW I've tried. No tagging, no favorites, scrolls slowly, looks bad to the eye, once you open a folder and a subfolder, you have to manually close them one by one or use a shortcut to close them all. Look at FL Studio's browser; it's quite good since the earliest version. It should not be that hard.
Huge update to usability/functionality of launcher: I also mentioned it a while ago in this topic, it's just another arrangement tool in the eyes of the Presonus, it's nothing like in Bitwig or Ableton. There are a lot of issues with it that I can't even bother to write here. But it's not a fun thing to use as of now. Forget fun, I don't even think it's usable.
Update to piano roll: It's slow and clunky to use. I wish they did something about it to make it more swift and fun to use. Example I'm looking at is again FL Studio. The best piano roll in a DAW IMO.
UI update: I think they already did something to its look in SO6 or SO7, and it's much better than the previous, but I still think that it looks bad and old. Especially their synths/samplers and effects look horrid.
Adding modulators: Having Bitwig-like modulators would be huge, but idk if it's the main selling point of S1, so I doubt they'll do anything like this. Right now, they have some tools to make automation lines like sine wave LFO shapes or randomized or step, but I don't think it's good enough.

FL Studio's browser is horrible - much prefer the one in S1 which is easy to organise and you can add thumbnails of plugins to it

I was talking about the browser to select samples from but you may be right, everyone likes different things.aMUSEd wrote: Thu Sep 04, 2025 6:38 am FL Studio's browser is horrible - much prefer the one in S1 which is easy to organise and you can add thumbnails of plugins to it

Ah I see - I rarely use samples but when I do I go to Sononym for finding them. I thought you meant the plugin browser - in FL I can't even see most of my plugins and it is very hard to organiseFornicras wrote: Thu Sep 04, 2025 6:41 amI was talking about the browser to select samples from but you may be right, everyone likes different things.aMUSEd wrote: Thu Sep 04, 2025 6:38 am FL Studio's browser is horrible - much prefer the one in S1 which is easy to organise and you can add thumbnails of plugins to it

The original developers are Wolfgang Kundrus and Matthias Juwan. Wolfgang designed Nuendo, (and thus Cubase), while Matthias wrote the VST3 spec at Steinberg, as well as the Krystal audio engine which is the foundation of Studio One. Wolfgang left many years ago, but Matthias is and has been a PreSonus VP for as many years.trusampler wrote: Wed Sep 03, 2025 10:36 pm Did the original developers ( who also developed cubase/nuendo ) for Studio One leave ?

It seems that the development team has spent a great deal of time porting Studio One to Arm laptops..........

They're also working on Linux versions and the dawproject format along other not so visible things.dellboy wrote: Thu Sep 04, 2025 9:12 am It seems that the development team has spent a great deal of time porting Studio One to Arm laptops..........

And about those complaining about launcher not working as Ableton Live, just RTFM. Defaults are not the same, that's it.

I'm in with the disappointing annual cycle of Studio One 7, but I at least hope for an update that includes support for the new Kontrol MK3 Firmware 2. Fingers crossed.
