In a word no, however donationware & freeware are but they differ (eg: if you use a plug-in or application alot which asks for a donation then you should donate what it is worth to you as then you are doing 2 things: 1.Doing the right thing (being a gent or whatnot) & 2. Ensuring that the software has every chance of being further developed and improved
I am not an expert on such matters, so i am just giving my thoughts as too what i would do. The amount is you donate is most of the time not specified, so that lets you give as much or as little as you can afford/justify...etc.
Shareware i think is no more than demo versions of software (i think) as they usually are feature restricted and time limited or both. Sometimes they are not so it can be a little bit of a confusion. Your best bet is to read through the site and the documentation which came with the software to find out the score, if that fails to give any answers then e-mailing the developer will be your next best bet
Hope that helps john1e, if not someone else will be able to provide a much clearer answer

john1e something like audacity, wavosaur, kristal audio engine, mulab - are all freeware and vst plug-in hosts (as the majority of all these pages like jimi said are mainly plug-ins and 97% at least are totally free (i thought you meant in general: sorry bout that mate). As long as you have Cycling '74's Pluggo Runtime (as quite a few are built using Max/MSP then you will be good to go man.
Dont worry jimi, when the plug-ins go a bit dry then we will strike with the drum machines and take it from there (as there has been quite a few samplers pop up along with synths so we need to feed the samplers some shots). So i should have that sorted by the end of the week (need 5 or 6 more kits and i have 20 potential kits that i dug out but i have to check if they are fair game first). After drum machine hits we could go for all manner of sounds for pumping through the samplers if we have time and keep em on mediafire? so they are all in one place
...until the last grave is empty mate
Dean
