I think the real problem isn't the price of the base program. The upgrade price is nearly identical to last year. It is the perception that you won't have the COMPLETE Live6 if you don't also get Sampler and the EIC. If you have something that is going to fill the niche of Sampler, then you don't need it. If you already have sound content that resembles EIC (winds, strings, brass, percussion) then use that. The price for Live6 the program is no different than past upgrades, and there is a lot of new stuff in there.
Ask yourself this:
Did I use Live5 well? Or was Live5 somehow crippled without Sampler and the EIC? This is all down to perception, and the fact that all of us are gear-whores. We want the whole enchilada, when we should be asking...what do I need to get my ideas out there.

Well, most people are comparing to what the competition is offering. I mean, as has been pointed out, when you DO include the additional instruments, it's nearly the same price as Logic. And Logic comes with so much more it's almost laughable.

and yet Logic cannot do what Live does... so call it laughable if you want, but I would rather have Live than Logic

Before I bought Operator I found it annoying/almost offensive that many/most of the demo and tutorial songs files caused Live to jump into "Demo" mode, with a red warning message. It almost made me feel somehow dishonest, or a cheap-skate. I personally think that adds considerably to the pressure to buy Operator.
It will be interesting to see how many of the Live 6 demos/tutorials feature the EIC and/or Sampler, and how many will run without shooting your paid-for software back into demo mode.

Not trying to push AudioMidi as a vendor, but I get their "newsletter" and they are offering the following deal:
http://www.audiomidi.com/Live-5---Trigg ... ?CPID=1996
Might be an relatively inexpensive way to get LIve 5 and Live 6 and a Trigger finger as a bundle.
