It doesn't even freak S2 out.

on mac in S2 a basic instance takes 2% so that's quite a bit more and up to 5% with some of the multiband presets.

Still acceptable IMO

first thing i looked for was the solo button which is not there so at least i am not crazy lol.

I am sure FF being such a responsive bunch will add it.

That said, this thing within just ten minutes of demoing, instantly replaced about 6 other plugins for me and then some.

This is a *must have* with absolutely no doubt whatsoever.

Hi ttoz, just interesting what these plugins were.
I really like Saturn I hope I will by it. However, it can't replace Nomad's Magnetic for me, coz it has a different sound on tube and tape modes.

Not sure how this could replace Magnetic2, whilst I can see how you draw similarities, in use very very different beast.

Downloaded the demo and been playing with it for the last two hours...and as much as I can see the reason for overall excitement I'm not totally sold out yet when it comes to convincingly pleasant saturation for vocals. For example, I can strap two or three combinations of nebula tubes with some preamp simulations and it always puts vocals in its rightful position with cream and butter in all the right places. The Fabfilter seem to make things a bit boomier and grittier...I should also mention that I'm not very adventures with plugins and whenever I find something that works I rarely venture into new territories. I guess, I'll wait for some more presets from the fab gurus before plunging into it again.

+1 for replacing magnetic 2.

Here's something I tried just replacing the few instances of ezmix I had around and was surprised by the preliminary results. Being able to quickly make band with the graphic representation and then adjust to taste seems to be something that works with many different areas.

+1 so having the solo per band, that would be nice.

You could, but I wouldn't recommend it. I really wasn't able to get anything satisfying out of it guitar wise until I put an amp sim after it and even when I disabled the amp stage and just tried to use the cab section (I tried both Amplitube and Speakerphone) I got no where. Of course, that's as easy as downloading Amplitube 3 Free or another amp sim of your choice.

BTW, since I mentioned Speakerphone, it has some fantastic distortion algorithms built in. Of course nothing near Saturn, but very good.

Well, each to their own. I really like the type of weird guitar distortion you can get out of Saturn. You can very easily create something completely unique which I like a lot! I'm not really interested in always creating "realistic" amps. I want to explore new nice sounds.

I cooked that one up in about 10 minutes so it's not mixed or anything. All compression, most of the EQing and of course all saturation is from Saturn. Oh, and all "mastering" is from Saturn as well. There's a bit of valhallaroom on the guitars and drums. That's it.

EDIT: It's also important to note that it's very simple to create a very nice and responsive guitar tone, one that really lets you play with the dynamics! Oh I just love that envelope follower. You can even "cheat" by having a LFO as a mini sequencer accenting a few notes synced to tempo. It's a real treat to work in this uncommon, very creative way. That's actually what I love about all the creative plugins from FabFilter.. they just "tick" with me and I almost always create new things when tweaking the plugins.

Magnetic has really smooth tube and tape at even maximum values, so Saturn just can't replace Magnetic with all honest. Different sounds here.

hey, I reaaaally got lots of distortion/saturation tools here (i am a huge fan of Ohmicide) - but i think this one will be my new swiss knife. Great sound, as allways @fab tools - amazing mod. possibilities (the def. most amazing thing here is to modulate parameters), breathtaking presets (yeah, I love just stepping through...) etc...all i need is here

I started playing around with Saturn, so I made a little test project, and it sort of turned into a short track. Oops.

Apologies for winning the loudness war I didn't spend any time mixing or mastering.

What I noticed is that on HQ mode (which is 8x oversampling) it really chewed up CPU. I have 5 instances of Saturn in this track, and when I flipped them up to HQ for the final render I noticed that the track was no longer playable in real-time

I own Kombinat & Dva, d16 Devastor & Redopter, CamelPhat, and other effects that can be driven to distortion like the CL Series compressors, Runciter, Event Horizon limiter, and a bunch of freeware guitar amps and pedals, but I have to say, I can't think of anything that compares to this as far as workflow.

I didn't even bother with presets, I just fed in a simple bassline at the start and started playing. Next thing I know there's this crazy pulsing beast trying to escape my speakers, and well, what could I do? I had to add a kick, so I popped open DMD and dropped in a nice hard kick sample, put Saturn on that to tweak the EQing and mess with the saturation, then played another sample right on top of it. Suddenly its three hours later and I'm staring at a three and a half minute stompy noisefest.

Has anyone put it up against Kombinant?

I'd be interested to hear that, never got to play with Kombinat. Not that many of these multiband distortion units are that comparable, save maybe Ozone? That would be one to try...

IMHO, Kombinat sounds completely different. Dva sounds great, it has a nice UI, but its much more of a straight forward digital distortion unit. I like that about it, and I can't think of any distortion plugin I have thats more nasty or glitchy sounding. That said, its just different than Saturn. It completely lacks the warm and subtle tones I get from Saturn, and when driven hard it can't do that strange humming I can get out of Saturn, it just wrecks the sound. But that's exactly what I want Dva for.

Now, d16 Devastor has more to fear from Saturn I think, its UI is a bit small and obtuse for me. But its more of a surgical tool anyway, a one trick pony, its a diode clipping distortion emulator. And it does that job well. The great thing it has is synth-style resonant filters that can be placed before or after the distortion unit in the signal path. I mostly use this for a very specific kind of distortion already, and when I want that Devestor sound I go right to it. I mostly farm it for presets since I don't enjoy sound designing with it. Still, I will likely keep using it for that particular sound, but Saturn seems like it will be my go-to distortion unit. (anyone know of a good preset pack for it?)

Honestly, I don't think I've ever used Redopter in a song since I bought it. I'd love for someone to show me what its good for, because I've tried and failed to come up with a use for it.
