Are we seeing the decline of the plug-in industry?

I haven't read this whole thread so apologies if this has been said before, but I have the greatest respect for companies like yours, Urs, or DMG for example, who don't do sales.
It's good to have launch offers or bundle discounts but sales are just a slap in the face to loyal customers. In line with what you are saying, this often occurs when companies use resellers, and lose control over pricing. A case of your "short term greed" sometimes I'm sure.
Don't get me wrong, I will happily buy a plugin in a sale, but once I know that a company does sales, the difference is that I will never buy a plugin at full price from them. I'm not in any position though to judge whether a company makes more money from having sales, or from never having them.

only reason you wouldn't download a snowboard is that 3D printers aren't big enough yet

Remember when CD prices first went up to $17-20? Customers didn't want to pay that much for a CD with only one or two songs on it that they liked. I think something similar is occurring with plug-ins. I do feel bad for those whose passion is to create this stuff, but how do you compete with free? iTunes $1/per song is how! Plug-in creators have to find a way to follow that model; go cheap, in bulk and make money. Or, create a new model. Waves clearly sees this and has been adjusting their prices accordingly.
Charging more than $50 for a single plug-in is soooo 2005

Wow. Just wow. That's all I can say when I hear someone complain about the cost of plugins in 2013, when great software is almost given away and talented, hardworking developers everywhere are struggling to make ends meet and sometimes (despite having made products that "everyone" in the industry knows about) not even making enough money to eat a proper diet. Incredible.

If you want to support devs you can always donate money in addition to buy their plugins.

Another way to stay in business is to just provide plugins, which don't have free/cheap alternatives.
You won't find a plugin like DIVA for free.
You won't find a plugin like The Glue or The Drop for free.
You won't find a plugin like Harmor for free.
You won't find ...
I will even pay prices like 300€ for a plugin ... but then it has to be something more than "just another" XYZ-plugin.

Well, I'm sure you could, but it's not a model I have great faith in myself. Instead, I just buy lots of software, promote quality products, and do my bit to stop people from pirating stuff.Crackbaby wrote:If you want to support devs you can always donate money in addition to buy their plugins.

I wonder why people don't seem to piss and moan about hardware synth prices nearly as much, when really they are much more limited than software. I think software devs have shot themselves in the foot by constantly devaluing their products. Not that I mind a good sale.

Anyone who's read some of my opinions on plug-ins would know that I love Plug-in Alliance software. Would I pay full price? Absolutely not. $299 today, $99 tomorrow? It's absurd.
Without their sales I would probably have bought at most 2 or 3 plug-ins because I couldn't afford otherwise, with their sales I've bought much more. But it's because of these sales I'll never buy at full price.
If they had a cheaper price to start with, lets say 50% cheaper than now, I'd have bought all at full price.
But it's their business. Just saying.

Psychologically speaking, a product costing 10 at 50% sale is better than a product costing 5. Also, these sales attract our lack of impulse control
Some suffer more from it than others!
