Yes, everything generating midi to the Synth is generally allowed.Hellfog wrote:Are you allowed to use arpeggiator plugin?

Ok I am back. So many posts about AU version and stuff; I'm on windows 8.1 and the 2015-04-29 build works great for me and this synth is fantastic!!! I am 40, I remember these sounds-- I didn't have a JP-8X, but it was an object of admiration later when it was an older cheap synth. To have one now in our computers (for free!) is a blessing.
Shout out to Takao UK for a fantastic track, and wagtunes (hope you remember me from gearslutz) and I especially thank those who put up presets that I used or learned from (you know who you are).
My entry is a progessive, upbeat tune, where I tried to respect the character of the synth while showing off the diversity of what it is capable of, my song "Summer '90":
https://soundcloud.com/beatdriver408/osc75
I'm putting this up now even though the final mixdown/mastering is (maybe) not complete. I tried to focus on harmony and composition.
This is my first OSC, I did my best to comply with both the spirit of getting the most from the synth while preserving it's character all the rules, and with an open heart my Ableton Live project file is available for download at:
https://blend.io/project/55545b558cea4c5e2de50498
In particular the ableton drum rack might be of help for people having trouble with making percussion. If nothing else, judge me by my snare! I spent many hours on it, it's not perfect, but probably the best I can do with this synth.

What do you mean? All sounds must originate from PG8X so that includes drums. You're of course welcome to use the patches posted in this thread either as a basis for your own patches or as is.Hellfog wrote:How about drums?
If you want to use a sequencer for drums you will probably have to find a way to filter midi events and send to different channels. How to do this will depend on your DAW.

A few posts back I posted a MUX (mutools.com) which creates a drumset, using only PG8Xs as sound source and a module that assigns notes to each unit. Super easy and pleasant!

Only Mux is not allowed unless you're using MulabTaron wrote:A few posts back I posted a MUX (mutools.com) which creates a drumset, using only PG8Xs as sound source and a module that assigns notes to each unit. Super easy and pleasant!
Perhaps I'll use the demo version in the next challenge just to be able to use Mux

You can as long as the arpeggiator is freeware. If you have a commercial arpeggiator, you can just use it, record the output and then remove it, so no one will ever knowHellfog wrote:Are you allowed to use arpeggiator plugin?

I am using Mulab, of course, and I can highly recommend it, too!mehum wrote:Only Mux is not allowed unless you're using MulabTaron wrote:A few posts back I posted a MUX (mutools.com) which creates a drumset, using only PG8Xs as sound source and a module that assigns notes to each unit. Oops I`m sorry to hear this, I mean that your room was flooded.actioncat wrote:Mojo42 wrote: Coooooooool. I`m glad to see you joinCan`t wait to get all the great patches you surely will make this time

Seriously: Nice to see you![]()
Good to be here again, and nice to see you're still here as well! I meant to come back for Dexed last month, but I had a lot going on, and also my room flooded 3 times and needed some work so that never happens again...
The soundbank you made for Eclipsis was very unique and I`m quite happy that you have shared it, but in the case of PG-8X you could be right. But simply let`s wait and see if you can make sounds we don`t have yetactioncat wrote: About patches though: as I was making some of the first patches for this OSC I thought I might not post anything this time, cause everything I was coming up with seemed to already be covered pretty well in other people's soundbanks.
This is what I was thinking but couldn't put into words myself:So anything unique I might get out of it will probably come at a post-synth stage, but I'll post what I make when they're all made if there's any that add anything to what we've already got.Taron wrote: PG8X has only a very, very narrow spectrum of sound you can coax out of it without clotting up its quality or brilliance. As a result sounds tend to come out quite identical. The whole thing acts as though it has just one sound in three weights. With a bit of noodling and some courage you can stretch out this spectrum wide enough to get the rest with some more aggressive EQ work.

all things go right as of their will.

Here's my submission: The Clap Of The Fat Pearl
A trancey deep tune, not as "strange" as the one from OSC74, and no massacre
I designed all the sounds from scratch, and the sounds I liked defined my musical journey.
https://soundcloud.com/stardustmedia/de ... wnloadable
Done with 24 instances of PG-8X.
Channel processing, effects and "mastering" only with Logic stock plugins:
- Almost on all channels Logic Channel EQ
- On some channels Logic Compressor
- 2x Space Designer
- 2x Stereo Delay
- 3x Tape Delay
The only 3rd party plugin I used was Voxengo SPAN for metering. It's the best free meter plugin: http://www.voxengo.com/product/span/
And here's the Logic project file for you guys: http://www.stardustmedia.com/misc/KVR_O ... tPearl.zip
Hope you have fun listening to it!
