ok, you know it really aint that hard to get. I'm up in Maine, the tourists have gone home, it's beautiful out (well it's night now), I'm finally getting to know my neighbors...especially next door...so I have three beers (he has 9
) and I come back and this is still going on.
Wags, I dont want you to not be negative ok? Dont need that. I also dont need people egging wags on just because he's gonna respond. I have had a report on this thread, I have had a pm on this thread and this is not a complaint as I encourage you folk to use these avenues. But what to do? The op, has a legit question but we are in a rut pulling us over to the shoulder. So here's what I am going to do, I'm gonna try a play I think from Meffy's playbook (though it might be Gary's as well). I'm going to lock the thread, not forever because this is not the fault of the op and though he could get an answer here someone still might give him what he is looking for. I'll try to remember to unlock in a few hours, if not first thing in the morning.
Then, let's try to stay on topic kay?

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Oh my, things really got out of hand over the weekend.
Don't know if I should feel flattered or embarrassed.
Anyway, I am reclaiming my thread. I don't want it be pointless throwing dirt. Hopefully it will help someone in their decision because clearly there are others with similar requirements.
I'm replying only to questions that constructively move thread forward.
EDITS: grammar and stuff

At the moment I narrowed down my list to 3 options with one real contender.
1) Saurus
Fits the most. Nice UI, sounds good and as of 2.5 update sounds even better. Same update brings drag'n'drop modulation and right-click assignment. It's not a Serum level, but ok. Responsive envelopes, 800+ presets - what's not to like.
Preset browser is good too. Easy to find sounds, presets can be changed with mouse wheel, star based rating.
Mod matrix is a bit quirky, but works for me.
Now, I've seen here Tone 2 synths branded here as placticky sounding but I don't care. It's fine to me, not too vintage nor too modern with good range of sounds. And inexpensive. Both CPU and money wise. Just what I need.
I'll be eyeballing it till Black Friday and snatch it the very first day of sale.
2) Wiggle
Very interesting product in subtractive synth market. I wouldn't be considering it as main go-to synth, because of few things - not so good filter, no common AMP envelope, no ADSR for filter (just MSEGs), only one modulation per knob. However I like its OSCs, they are fun.
Probably would buy it on sale too, just to see where would development lead.
3) ANA
Current 1.5 version isn't very interesting to me. UI is small, sound is barely OK. However judging by the few youtube videos I've seen v2 should be good. Sounds are fine, UI is reworked, some clever stuff with ARP.
I'll be keep an eye on it.

True that.Urs wrote:You know, I don't mind if this topic gets dragged on forever. Doesn't matter if someone dislikes Hive in-between. But it still suggests that alternatives are kinda more sparse than one would've thought.
Besides two obvious rivals, with one's layout is almost Hive knob to knob, some forum digging is needed.

I made a tune yesterday using one instance of Tyrell, one of Serum and seven of Simpler. It felt good.

AFAIK, Urs didn't promise that. His words was something like "the offer will make Repro owners quite happy". One can refer to Superbooth video for exact quote.Numanoid wrote:Why not get Repro-1 ?chk071 wrote:Yeah, you have all the synthesis option on one page. But only because there are so few of those.Of course, if that's your thing, and Retrologue's sound is also, it is a good option.
u-he has promised that the upgrade to repro-5 will be free for Repro-1 users

I suppose pointless-ness of that requirement really depends on your synth programming approach.chk071 wrote:You know, that tabbing thing is a really pointless requirement... Retrologue 2 has 3 pages you'll have to browse, to operate the arpeggiator, and to operate the fx section. ANY reasonably featured synth will require tabbing and pages, even Hive has different tabs, if you will, for arp and sequencer, and the fx, in th middle section, and for the keys, and mod matrix 1 & 2 in the lower section. I'd rather suggest getting over the requirement that it has to be all operable on one page. Any of the more popular synths have a good enough interface to get down and dirty.Igro wrote:Minimal tabbing, this is what he wanted as well. Retrologue is another player here. The unison is a bit of restricted in terms of panning though.Numanoid wrote:Dune 2 and SPIRE seems like good alternatives for a solid sounding synth as the OP wants.
I am not familar with Rapid, so dunno about that.
I like to see what contributes to a sound at a glance, so I can tune it and carry on.
As for Hive - yes, it's tabbed. But it makes sense. I don't need keyboard, when I tweaking matrix. I don't need effects when I adjust arp.
Most synths are tabbed, beside the simplest ones. But some are tabbed with greater consideration.

I'm unaware how much Repro 5 will differ from Repro 1, besides obvious polyphony, but Repro 1 is definitely isn't what I'm looking for.chk071 wrote:Fair enough, but, he addedNumanoid wrote:And I thought the OP wanted a solid sounding subtractive synthchk071 wrote:I thought the OP wanted something similar to Hive, feature wise.
So, i was under the impression that he looks for a bit more than something like RePro. Anyway, either way, i don't think the thing he looks for exists. So, rather time to tune down the expectations, and take a look at what is available. I'd choose either Spire or Sylenth1. But, tastes differ. Is there another "Hive" but not from u-he?
Beside Sylenth1 and Synthmaster One. I have a gripe with either one.
It is a hardware emulation with all or most inherited limitations, and I need more of a generic synth with more advanced modulation.
Hive is perfect on paper. I just subjectively don't find its sound flavor to my taste.
I'd rather use Hive than Sylenth or Spire.

I'm glad you've been able to narrow things down a bit. I own all 3 of these synths and my favorite of them is also Saurus 2. You will absolutely love it. Simple to program. Great sound. Not the most flexible and feature packed synth in the world, but for the money it's a great value. You won't be sorry.
