My absolute favorite pieces I've owned over the years (dating back to 1982) that blew my mind and inspired new work: Prophet 5, Polysix, Wavestation EX, Matrix 6, and the only one I still own, a Yamaha AN1x.

My DX200 punched above its weight, too - but I wouldn't buy one today (WAY over-inflated due to the board I guess. They go for 500-600 bux, lol).

Missed the Wavestation enough that I just today took advantage of the 50% off sale and got the VST for $49. And it's GREAT.

Been getting back into my OB-6. It continues to blow away expectations on what it can do (far more than many who have preconceived notions think) - and how well it can do it.

The Star Electronics Synare 3, it sounds cool enough, but if you want a synth that everyone will want to play and nobody will want to hear it has to be the Synare 3. No other synth is so enticing to your talentless friends who want to give it a try or annoying to everyone else who wants the current friend to shut the f**k up so that they can give it a try. You want to turn a party inside out, get a Synare 3!

The Synare has always looked fun to me, but I've never even seen one in real life.

Yes, amazing synth. Much better than most vintage Oberheim's, IMO.

If you like Wavestation that much you should really have spent a bit more and got Wavestate native. When you compare it to Wavestation (also one of my all time favourites) you're going to need to change your underpants. It's Wavestation to the power 2 or maybe even 3. Think of all the things you ever wanted Wavestation to do that it couldn't and then add some more that you never thought of.

Yeah, I thought I really didn't need it, was quite happy replacing my dead Wavestation with the plugin, but once I heard Wavestate I bought it instantly. Got the hw then bought the sw on intro sale. Strangely, I'm starting to use the plugin more than the hw, and usually I hate sw synth programing. Try the demo and twiddle some of the presets parameters like sample and timing and you kinda go...WTF?! I couldn't believe my ears when I heard it do a classic analogue style arpeggio tweaking the filter, then change the actual samples it uses to make the arp. And there's a preset that's a German style doof-doof pounding techno beat with bass riff - makes you check you're using the right synth

. That's not what anyone buys a Wavestate for, but it's amazing that it can do it.

I tried one in a shop recently and was also impressed by the sound and ease of use. I was very excited when it was first announced but it fizzled out after finding out they dropped the CV outs from the Micro. I only have room for one desktop synth and I wanted a keyboard capable of driving my Eurorack, so I opted for a Hydrasynth Explorer instead. If I ever find room for more keyboard synths, I think I would like to own a MiniFreak though

Do you mind elaborating on those quirks? It's currently a frontrunner for my new poly GAS.

You might enjoy it more than I did. I found the lack of a screen to make things more distracting rather than less. I also couldn't get the LFO to behave like I'd expect, I think it reset on every note or has a lag/slop to its waveform. Anyway it just wasn't for me in the end. The sound though? Superb.

I've only had 3 hardware synths (besides that Synare):
DX-21, CZ-101 and Sub Phatty. I wasn't too impressed with the DX at that time, but the CZ was pretty cool. I sold it eventually as it had those small keys and bought the DX after that. I wanted a DX-7 but couldn't afford it back it then, so I settled for a used DX-21.

Even though the Phatty is monophonic, I love the quality of sounds it can create. The Marc Doty videos helped me decide to buy one.

I will be getting a JV-880 soon and am looking forward to it.

Hardware synths that blew away your expectations
