If the sound is righteous as it appears to be it could be very simple even black and white and I would use it. That is the key thing and from what I have seen it has very few controls that need to be used so hopefully it will be a small GUI just for the sake of real estate since we will be running this into other FX more than likely.

Well, I would say this synth deserves a fancy GUI, so, please, those out there with graphic design skills please offer the man a hand (assuming he needs/wants, of course).

Totally agree. There's nothing more off-putting than a bad GUI. Bad in terms of design, and function.

sure the GUI is important but it is the last area of concern and I realize the owner may want to put out a design himself because it is fun to do that sort of thing and creating something that looks as well as sounds awesome is important but.....

then again when the sound is as awesome as this one sounds I really don't care about the GUI all that terribly much because that can always be improved later

to me getting it out and usable is the first step then you add to that with making it prettier later on.

Both Kriminal and myself have proposed to help, but so far it seems 2DaT is going to do it himself (at least that's the notion I'm getting as he says he's working on it).

It's his baby, so I can understand that. Let's hope he can get the time to do all the work. Creating a good looking and functionally optimized GUI is not an easy task. I know from several developers that they consider that the hardest part of the job.

Constructing a good GUI is difficult, but mostly because it is hard to make it work smoothly. Making changing the parameters in real time a smooth experience for the user and the DAW. It is a challenge in itself. Making pretty buttons and knobs is like making a banana shake in comparison to making the GUI just work smoothly.

Your first plugin is a great lesson. Just like a first mix, first girl, first masturbation, first heroin shot, first joint, first... errr I got carried away,

I wish you good luck, 2DaT! Until then we can play with it. Does that mean that the number of parameters is established?

Does anybody find the volume of the noise oscillator too low compared to OSC 1 and 2? I think it's too low. I am trying to make some drums with Obxd. :) I think that noise oscillator could use a boost of about 18 to even 20dB. Yes, that's a lot, but it is really quiet.

I totally agree. That's why he might consider getting some help ;)

:uhuhuh:

Making a nice looking knob is fairly easy (if you know what you're doing). Making it fit in with a total theme however, takes several tweaks of a first version and that takes time. Also designing several controls that go together style-wise, and creating the total design, is much harder that it seems for the non-experienced bystander ;)

The GUI I'm doing for the Ragnarok synth has already way over 30 hours in it :D

what sort of look would you go for with OPXD? So far there are only a small number of controls required.

Would you make certain controls bigger knobs than the others to emphasize which controls get most use?

Would there be any current GUI designs that you would point to as an example that might fit or be an example of something good to steal from?
