What would make you switch to Linux?

in any in any order,

and an ampsim/fx host, that supports tube types, convolution reverbs,
amp models, mono and stereo fx, if you like guitar sounds.

These seem like desirable items for mainstream production variety.
Their installation is trivial, for an experienced every-day user like you,
what are your first non-linux choices in those 4 categories?

Take your time, I only ask for 4 reaktor apps that are better than the linux apps

As an aside, I don't think apps that run well using wine, like reaper and reaktor,
need to be ported to linux. If there were money in it, or the developer really

Well, let's see, no open source Reaktor, so, we have to pay for closed source reaktor. So, as far as apps go, it's the same for all OS's except that under linux, I have to run Reaktor under wine.

What's the advantage to me of doing that when it doesn't work with my hardware?

I have no gripe about incorporation as an institution,
large or small, and feel free to praise or criticize them based on my opinion
of their corporate actions. I think these two are utilising
planned obsolesence, creating products that required new hardware,
or new software. If customers don't mind, it's fine by me.

you might not even be aware how much you are doing it (maybe just too entrenched in a community with this kind of group-mind), but you keep alluding to divides between the rich and poor, and using phrases like self-sufficiency, corporate ceo's etc. it betrays more than perhaps you intend it to

as for planned obsolescence ?? maybe it seems like that to someone from a community that is happy to stay well behind the technological/progress curve just to grab whatever small autonomy can be had in this corporate-controlled world we live in. my last mac died at the beginning of this year but, until that point, i had been using it for over 7 years. that i couldn't get the latest os was not too much of a stretch. had i been able to, it would have been a free upgrade

i am not going to play fanbois and deny that i am somewhat irked sometimes at how quick this is all moving, but until the advantages (for me) stop outweighing the disadvantages, i am in for the ride

new features and tech are there if you want, but you really can get away with jumping off of the carousel if you want to. were i to be a casual computer user (internet browsing, movie watching, skype calls etc, i could probably still get by on osx tiger or leopard. in fact, i bet that even a 6-year old mac os would still allow me to run music software that eclipses what linux offers without having to take from the hand you have already bitten, by emulating windows environments

Bit on the fence with this. I bit so hard in fact that I didn't realise it was a fence made of metal. Won't do dat again. I eat the produce of animals such as cheese and I also eat fish, so I can't say I am a vegetarian even, let alone a vegan. But believe you me, the world of shit this has oppened up to me, explaining at quaint dinner parties in Islington N1, has caused me no end of grief. When someone says (patronisingly) to me, 'So tell me Tarquin, why do you not eat meat, yet you are wearing leather crotchless pants?' - I spit my food onto the floor, then say, with my best Johnny Rotten sneer 'f**k you grandad'. I then jump out of any open windows for great effect, making sure, of course, beforehand, that none is above the second floor. This is why I always wear my parachute. Being a member of the Scouts, one can never be too prepared.

Yep, done that, helped a few out of sticky situations. Worked at the Citizen's Advice Beauraueue (maybe you can spell that last word, coz I f**king can't).

I was going to work at the young disadvantaged people's home whose fathers and mothers have abused them and don't want to take any more. But alas, not only did they want a full enhanced CRB check on me (I would have failed this as I am a previous child molester), but they wanted to ask previous spouses about whether I had a bit of a bad temper or not. Shame really, I was looking forward to getting all hands on with the little buggers.

I enjoyed Vista as well! I was hesitant at first as I heard bad things, but after running Msconfig and disabling things as opposed to uninstalling, it ran light. I don't see how everyone can think the same, and it never was even valid.

Vista had it's issues, but at least the system volume slider always worked for me. I feel like Linux is very fragile. If I poke around too much , or click somewhere the programmer didn't plan for, it'll break the whole OS. That's the last thing I want when I'm trying to create.

You see, this is where Linux is actually quite nice, Windows not so much. Linux isn't fragile at all, in fact Windows is more fragile. Linux gives you all the rope you need to hang yourself, Windows puts you in a nice padded room. When you have no intent on hanging yourself in the first place, but, you find yourself "in the noose" so to speak, you will have the tools to save yourself with Linux, with Windows, it's all over.

I've lost data on a windows system because of problems on a linked drive caused particular elements of a user profile to be lost and it cannot be recreated. This kind of thing doesn't happen on Linux. I never have to worry that any drive I create in a linux system will be readable, modulo drive failure, in another system. This doesn't work on Windows unless you jump through some hoops.

Speaking of linked drives, what a pain in Windows it is to unify your file system. I had to laugh a bit at the user that likes separate drives, what an arcane carry over from the DOS days. On linux, my personal user data is always on a separate volume, as are my databases. It's trivial to then move these to a new system or rearrange your volumes without changing the paths that applications expect.

But yes, because it's not a padded room, you can screw it up. I have learned to live with the padded room for audio, and, in fact, no longer try to put my user drives on separate volumes. I just put documents there now. It's quite rare that I wish that I was on linux when working with audio. Probabaly the only exception to this is doing bulk processing of audio files. But I've solved this problem by putting my sample libraries on network drives which are accessible from all of my machines.

I -basically- liked all Windows versions, the only thing I've ever cared about was w/win 2000/xp they put it-you could click on a frozen program to close it, with win me and before that you had to restart your computer usually.
