iLoks are made of suck, but boy, it makes me chuckle when people spend 19 pages bitching about free products... :tu:

Haha ... as if You have any influence on having-trouble-with-iLok.

They will take away all Your nice plugins, in one go, with their next fvck-up.

Guess, that's when You'll start to care ...

Oh well.

I feel so dirty and useless :hihi:

OK ... I'm gonna rest my case.

Jan, specifically, what are the CURRENT problems you can demonstrate with the iLok drivers on Windows?

I dunno what to say. I've tried to be honest yet respectful. If you don't get one, you are a whiner, if you do get one you are an idiot. If you play the middle (and the most logical) course, you are in a special hell (cuz you get 3 sides of the knife)

This has been a rough day.

I'm still not sure I understand the basis of the argument. Yes, Pace installs drivers. Yes, you have to fork over $40 plus shipping for their little USB drive thingy. Yes, it's a stupid pain in the ass, particularly if all you want to do is demo the stuff the inimitably handsome Steven Slate comes out with every few months.

On the other hand, for people with multiple machines, and those who use mobile computing, a dongle is a very reasonable solution.

What else am I missing?

The issue is we try to debate personal choice as if it is up to the next person what we do. At least half the stuff on kvr shouldn't be on kvr.

If ilok works for someone, more power to them.
If ilok doesn't work for someone, more power to them.

I already said that before. But today has tested my patience.

WOW, this thread is incredibly crazy, totally derailed because a free plugins, iLok required, and the qualities of the software? Well, thank you. Oh sorry, you were talking about?
Forget, too late to right the ship.

Finally had time to test it more thoroughly. GUI looks like it's from 2006 (which it is) but sound quality wise it is up to modern standard. Fortunately the knobs are not too fiddly like on some other older plugins. Overall it looks dated but is still usable. I also liked that you can reorder modules. Sound is very nice and the inclusion of micro pitch shift and delay is great idea as it makes very easy to thicken sounds quickly in a mix. Lot's of presets is also a +.
Overall I'd say it is a very solid and high-quality plugin so must be among the best freebies given away.

Now, when it comes to iLok, it sucks balls. A lot. Even with this freebie I already almost managed to get in a trouble. I absolutely loathe copy protection that needs manual deactivation. That is just plain f***ing annoying as I never remember to deactivate anything. So I almost wiped clean the virtual machine I used to test and would have lost the license. My head already hurts from just thinking about what I would have had to go through to get it sorted out.

Also PACE/iLok might seem ok as long as it works. But if anything happens then you are guaranteed to be in for a lot of hurt and grief and no help coming. And I guarantee you that it is only a question of time when they manage to screw up something again. PACE and devs who use it deserve all the vitriol they get. No point in complaining about the thread as this is just what happens when you tie your products to a brand as toxic as PACE.

Well said, I perfectly agree with your words, but 20 pages talking about what we know from other threads that is insane, I think. What I mean is that the issue is software and it seems we are more committed to execute an Eventide by the type of copy protection that they chose long ago.

I just don't know what people want. I don't have the clairvoyant dna chip that will "always and every single time do exactly what every single person wants" implant.

There was a post back a ways that talked about the "vitriol" and I see it was indeed a prediction. Anyways, enjoy or don't enjoy. It's up to you. See ya.

Post

Nice plug, no problems getting/installing/authorising/running it.
Excellent deal.

Come on, is there anyone who can discuss just the Ultrachannel sound and details please...
Can the mere existence of a FB account somehow use CPU cycles or RAM while you are recording?
Not really. There is nothing equivalent between personal information and use of computing resources....
My Pace background activity shows a little pop of 0.3% (and then go back to 0%) when I load Ultrachannel (and same thing with a bunch of other Ilok plugs) on a track in Reaper (Win 8.1/64bit). Hold on, I think my i7 is about to blow up...
Come on guys we're not on Pentium II anymore...
That doesn't change the fact that your analogy is completely useless...
Well yours too if you think that an app which has zero to insignificant impact on CPU can be "intrusive"...And fyi I was referring to some comments about Pace and Eventide collecting infos about the plugs not your CPU/RAM question.
