So: any person who had bought Alchemy and all of its libraries (1) day before the lockdown was f*cked; along with everyone else who had spent $$$ on Alchemy and depended on CA's support.Tens of thousands of dollars are spent on Alchemy in good faith; by hundreds of people - and the company disappears.
Except it didn't go down quite like that. Everyone was given six months in which they were able to backup and/or sell their licenses. The scarcity that this created meant that many who sold were able to make a profit. Furthermore, of those that kept it, I don't recall a single person saying their copies have stopped working since then either.

As much as i dislike their decision to sell to Apple, the shutdown was handled quite well really. It was a shame however that they were unable to talk publically about it, Ben had always been quite active within the community so i don't doubt he regrets having to go quiet in that way.

If you sell out, you’re a sell-out. Life’s too meaningful to trade your offspring for money, even if you would maintain visiting rights. Urs knows better.

real offspring, yeah. some f**king code? no, especially not if the trade was to improve your life, or your family's.

Huh? You can't make that sort of judgement. You have no idea what was going in internally in that company. For all you know they may have been great coders but very bad at running a profitable business and accumulated so much debt that the only option was to sell and bail out. Up here we have the little enterpreurial innovation hub centers that keep sparkling out tiny little cutting edge high tech companies. Great ideas and great new breed of business minded people but 90% of them fail within 1 to 5 years once the freebies from the government run out. Mainly because they keep running face first into the rock hard concrete wall of business reality that is the Ontario economy -- it's a land than is an extension of the north eastern US economies.. steel, car manufacturing and transpiration .. a million miles away from the latte sipping hipsters in Seattle and San Francisco. :D

Well, I don't think that's the case with either CA nor u-he.

mod edit: this post was originally trolling.
Sounds legit. Decent programmers can't make money unless they go into plugin development for ten-plus years. Best plan evar, because everyone knows that once they've done their decade, they all automatically get bought up by the biggest tech companies on the planet. Foolproof business plan, glad we have someone with your knowledge and insight to remind us of it. I hear Bezos will be announcing Amazon u-he-prime any day now.

My parents ran a business and occasionally had some tough time to overcome. Mother got literally sick when monthly wages were due but the company was low on cash. Endless phone calls with banks to ask for credit (-extension) or talks to clients to make them pay their invoices, sometimes before they were due or at least pay a part to avoid this terrible moment when you have to tell your employees that the wage will not be paid in time. All sorts of emotions took place: anger, frustration, despair, on both sides.

You can't imagine what kind of pressure this puts on you as a business owner. Therefore to some it's a relief to get rid of such sorrows and responsibilities.

what if you've got a few kids, the one you're selling is a bit of an arsehole. the sale would allow you and the rest of the family to live on a yacht! then its worth it!

or if you just sell a few of each kids organs, that way you have an ongoing income :)

Well, 'your' medical bills might start to peak so you would have to take that into account.
There is no such thing as a free lunch. Well, not for the kids anyway...

An analogy might be that I bought a new car from a very small manufacturer - and fairly shortly after I bought it, the car company shut it's doors - no customer service; no parts; no nothing. It's a new car - I can expect that it'll run w/o the need of extended service for years. If this happened to me: I'd want my money back right away - because I don't want to own & drive a car that wasn't supportable. Now let's say that the former owner of the car company gives everyone who bought his cars a phone call and explains to them that his company has been bought out by a much larger motor company and will stay in business - but it's *only* going to build and support the new yellow model going forward - the blue and red models (I have a red model) are discontinued and obsolete - please don't expect further contact by he or his former employees. He also tells everyone who bought blue or red that the reason why he decided to do this - basically abandon the owners of the blue and red cars - is because being the exclusive owner of the manufacturing concern was just too much work - that he had better things to do in life then spend all of his time taking care of our cars.

See how all of this sounds? The legal dep't of the company that he sold out to would not have appreciated him contacting the people that own the models that are discontinued; further risking complicating the situation - real money had changed hands; and many owners of the red and blue models - regardless of the reasons for his doing so - would not have been understanding - they'd want what they paid for either supported; or their money back.

This is exactly the sort of situation that's ripe for a class-action lawsuit - and what he and his former employees say - can and will be used in court.
