Everything from 'Confusion is Sex' to 'Sister' is pretty much perfect. 'Bad Moon Rising' is my overall favourite.

This will ruin any image I have, but my favourites are Dirty & Goo. Well they were the first ones I bought.

At the contrary, you just built yourself a Dirty Goo image!Barbed Wire Kiss wrote:This will ruin any image I have, but my favourites are Dirty & Goo. Well they were the first ones I bought.

Is that some sort of masonic thing? Perhaps a south Pacific wing?cptgone wrote:I once had a ticket for the Master Musicians of Jajouka with Thurston Moore but I couldn't make it

The Master Musicians of Jajouka are an incredible gnawa ensemble from Morocco.Barbed Wire Kiss wrote:Is that some sort of masonic thing? Perhaps a south Pacific wing?cptgone wrote:I once had a ticket for the Master Musicians of Jajouka with Thurston Moore but I couldn't make it

I think I saw them once...they sat on stage in a large circle and pretty much did squat unless smoking weed and giving the audience ignorant "what the hell you're still doing here" glances every now and then. It didn't matter really, because the audience was stoned as hell also
edit: The Master Musicians of Jajouka, that is. I've only seen Sonic Youth once, but it was well worth it.

I, too, just got into Sonic Youth about two years ago...
Daydream Nation is, to me, their most coherent effort.
Sister is my next favorite.
Evol is another good choice from their early period (first with Steve Shelley on drums, I think.
I don't like Goo much, Dirty is a better choice from that period.
I haven't heard the earlier stuff, but I've heard it's good, although nowhere near as focused as Sister or Daydream. The SYR records are also a nice treat if you just can't get enough. Vol. 1 and Vol. 3(with Jim O'Rourke) are my favorites.

I like alot of Sonic Youth stuff, and would catch them fairly frequently on Much Music spots like 'City Limits' and 'The Wedge' et al. But it was 'Goo' that made me finally go out and buy it. The song 'Cool Thing' is such a stone cold groove, I get that going in my head for months!
I also have on my 'to do' list is to get Thurston Moores solo album. (forgot the title now.) But he's got EVERYBODY that's anybody on it I hear?
Oh yeah, and Kim is in that new Kurt Cobain-ish movie too. (Forgot it's title as well.

Which Thurston Moore album? Both Moore and Ranaldo have done a LOT of solo stuff...Steven West wrote:I like alot of Sonic Youth stuff, and would catch them fairly frequently on Much Music spots like 'City Limits' and 'The Wedge' et al. Ah-Ha! It was 'Root'!
Sounds like such a interesting premise, Stereolab, David Cunnigham, and so many others working with Moore's guitar riffs.
Anyone know how good it really is?

I'm gonna have to throw my votes in for Sister and Dirty as well.. Ghosts of New York was an interesting (if not very coherent) experience, and Sonic Nurse actually didn't dissapoint me as much as I had thought it would..
Of course now you will also have to look into early dinosaur Jr. albums and get some Pixies in for good measure.

Root's alright. Some of the tracks are great, some not so much. Those kinds of compilations are usually hit or miss.Steven West wrote:Ah-Ha! It was 'Root'!Sounds like such a interesting premise, Stereolab, David Cunnigham, and so many others working with Moore's guitar riffs.

I love the Derek Bailey track on it. I haven't listened to it in a while, can't fully remember what each track was like.

Lee Ranaldo's new collab with Birchville Cat Motel is apparently really good - the sample over at Aquarius sounded very Vibracathedral Orchestra/Skullflower-ish.

As for mr. Ranaldo, From Here To Infinity is a brilliant piece of work, both sonically and as object.
