The more music you listen to, the better composer you'll be (I'm beginning to sound like Yoda).
(Pretentious font) How do you define Trance as a genre of music? Is it a purely commercial genre? Can it be defined by a series of notes or chords?

Post

It's "the mood", the need to "make world a better, happier place", being "honest", distributing "feelings of wellness" unto others that define trance... or so I was once told when asked someone listening to the MTV-approved variant of it and praising it above anything else ever done in music.

So Tell me jmh, was this guy carrying a bottle of water, chewing a lot and trying to grope you?

Post

Generally I try to avoid people who are into any those sort of chemicals :P

And no - this was the opinion from a die hard trance fanatic...

You couldn't make up a more off-putting definition of a style of music.
Sounds like he belongs to some crazy, religious cult (that's C.U.L.T)

Sonarman: if you really are curious I suggest having a look at Ishkur's Guide to electronic music.
There's a whole category devoted to Trance. I thinks the Trance fanatics generally prefer the subgenres "Goa" and "Psychedilic", and not "Epic" which is the one most people, unfamiliar with the genre, refers to as Trance.
Of course these 30 sec. clips won't give you an whole idea of what "Goa" and "Psychedelic" is about as most of those tracks are around 8 min. long.

Thank you. I'm no expert but I have a vague idea of what Psych trance is.
I occasionally play drums at clubs and hippy Goa trance people love drums (though most DJ's hate them).
I think I was just looking for an argument really...
Has anyone ever done Trance blues?

quite right.. one of my favorite psy songs is just under 30 minutes long (and produced with a tracker :o)

its like a story or a journey.. not to sound too silly.. but its true..

but anyways.. a big problem I've seen at kvr is people judging a genre against their tastes in other genres when its like comparing apples to oranges. that is to say, different music is created for different reasons - even inside of genres - so its not productive to say 'music style X sucks, listen to a real style like Y'

and then music of all types rely on different features such as rhythm, melody or even simply just an abstract progression. so like i say apples and oranges. cant really compare them in some contexts - its like trying to force a square peg in a round hole. :hihi:

I certainly have no hope then (not that I had much anyway). The first strains of a minor pentatonic scale has me running for cover.

(The above is mainly aimed at anything called "blues" that was made after 1962)
And all life's fears
Can invade my ears
I can handle it

you can make money making trance music? Wierd.

The problem is that things are way way more competitive than they ever were. A lot of the older producers were used to being some of the few who could afford to make the music due to the cost of gear but nowadays, if you're in the software world, things aren't as expensive. I'm amazed at how some of the good oldschool producers are putting out music that just seems mediocre compared the everything else that comin out nowadays (which, is mostly mediocre as well).

oh well

case and point,

prodigy, (i know they;re not trance but oh well)

How do you do the blue box quote on this forum? It never works for me.
To VitaminD - A well made point but If truth be told, I prefer oranges in a round hole.
(I was going to write more but my brain won't let me)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Ishkur is the most condescending of all the jackasses I've seen. The way he berates contemporary trance would be funny if it was written with humor in mind, but when you realize he is being serious, it fills you with... disgust. I'd kick him in the dingleberries if I met him.

more or less yes...because the funny thing is, all the psy stuff he likes is actually beginning to vanish up it's own arse..to pretentious..the innovation now lies within progg-breaks/house
