I guess I was impressed by the range of “supermodel” sounds, compared to somebody’s earlier apt remark about 2000 names for snow regarding how all the GR sounds quickly start to sound cut from the same cloth.
Of course, I was listening thru my usual “after I fix this...” filter:)

I've gone back and listened to these sounds a few times and I'm quite impressed with how true they sound to the original. More importantly, following links I'm came upon the new GNX3000 which sound quite promising as well. Supposedly the super models are being ported over to the 3000 but it still costs a bit to get these supermodels ($115?). Darcy, did you listen with headphones? It brings the poor-sounding reverb into sharp relief and doesn't do anything for the presets.
No doubt, they're good for what they are... multi-fx patches... but I wouldn't use them as a replacement just yet. Maybe if I tweaked them to strip them dry and then added my own room ambience with something like Convo Boy... that actually might work... hmmm....

I did, and I still think they were very good representations of the sounds they were trying to emulate.
Donegan was bang on... as was George Lynch's... Demartini and Angus were pretty darn good too. I pulled out cd's from each to compare, and I still think these models/patches are a very good representation of the recorded originals. Whether you like those sounds are not is another issue, but I think those demo's reflect pretty well the capabilities of the GNX. Like most patches these could be used quite well to get at your own sound. Too much reverb? Pull some out.
I am still gonna be hunting for a 3000 to try. I am still quite torn about how much I want to do witin the pc and how much I want to do outside. I have been leaning more and more to the non-pc side.

Well, I'll certainly confess that the actual distortions and matching EQs were pretty authentic-sounding for the "supermodels" (though I hope that there's more than one patch per artist), but the reverb and delay used just ruined it. Like you say, pull back some reverb (or pull it out completely and replace with something better on your DAW) and it could still end up being quite a good-sounding set of patches.
