I think it was basically a loudspeaker with 12 tuned strings, so you would just plug it in.

Yes, there were many synthesizers, even different electronic music movements, before Moog's first instruments. Likewise there were many automobiles before Henry made the first Ford.

Bob Moog was rather humble about his accomplishments, and never tried to claim that his success did not follow the work of others.

I chime in here, because the trend of this thread seems to be following a trend of "Moog invented it... no he didn't, there were lots of electronic instruments before..."

Bob himself didn't carry on like that.

Yes he did invent the synthesizer

He invented the "voltage controlled synthesizer" - his PhD thesis dealt with this idea. His initial products were big modular systems which were used in the studio by:

The Beatles on Seargeant Peppers etc,
The Who (the tune Who Are You used as the CSI theme has a Moog modular played by Pete T)
Wayne (Wendy) Carlos etc on Switched on Bach.

Fully spec'ed modular systems were large roomfulls of gear wtih patch cords everywhere - they had seven figure price tags.

The Mini Moog was the first affordable, portable synth which could be toted around by gigging musicians.

There were other large machines (some were mechanical for example) for mimicking instrument sounds before the VC synth.

No, he did not invent the EQ. EQs originated on early telephone systems. Likewise filters existed long before.

You mean in the sense that if ten thousand Monkees sat down at ten thousand Moog modular systems for 10,000 years, inevitably, one of them would play the Fur Elise?
