I use Psycle a lot. I think it's the best free sequencer out there. If you're interested, most of the music at my signature link was made with Psycle. (I've also used Tunafish on occasion, which, of course, is not a tracker.) I've played with Modplug some also -- a nice program for sample-based music, but there's no good documentation to get you started. (If you used the old FT2 or IT trackers, it's probably easy, though.)
People say great things about Renoise -- someday I'll get it, or maybe Aodix.
Buzz has some features, but still too clunky for my tastes. By the way, if you can't get it to run in XP, try running it in NT or Win98 compatibility mode. (I think you right click on the .exe and get to that choice through there somehow.)

I prefer the overall feel of the usual sequencer-style software (Cubase, Tracktion, etc.), but Renoise does do one thing that the big-name sequencers are still lacking (as far as I know): the ability to assign LFO's to any parameter of any plugin! If anyone can recommend and good sequencer that allows you to do this as eloquently as Renoise I would be in your debt.

I think you can do this LFO controlling thing in FLStudio. It has clever "internal controllers" i think they're called, which allow you to hook up intereactions between things and even program mathematical formulas to control parameters!!MaxC wrote:I prefer the overall feel of the usual sequencer-style software (Cubase, Tracktion, etc.), but Renoise does do one thing that the big-name sequencers are still lacking (as far as I know): the ability to assign LFO's to any parameter of any plugin! Ssdly(to my mind) its pattern sequencing and some other more minor issues let it down. Shame really, becuase for the price it offers amazing value for money. Damn that crap playlist though, otherwise i'd be in there like a shot.
I actually have similar issues with renoise. I was brought up on tracking, so to speak, but i REALLY miss that thing where you can mute each track within the pattern sequencer. That way you can have a smaller number of patterns but still an easy way to sequence and build up/break down your songs.
people remember that?
Code: Select all
pattern 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
intro x - - - - - - -
intro x - - - - - - -
intro x - x x - - - -
build - x - - - - - -
main1 x x x x x - - -
main1 x x x x x - - -etc.........i used to love that method

http://batman.no/buze/ try this. Its better than buzzle already and can load most of the machines that buzz can (99%). I dont know about stability because its still in beta but its going to be the resurgance of buzz, with improved features and further developement. Its very cool. I also find reViSiT really cool, its come a long way and right now is awesome!undef wrote:yeah, buzz is quite buggy. do you know buzzle? ( www.buzzle.de ) it's an imprved version of buzz. specs sound promising, but unfortunately it's still in in an early devellopment stage. a first beta is said to be released at christmass

Psycle Is my current tool of choice. I've really taken to it over buzz, the ft2 style enviroment was a bit of a chore at first but now i have got into it (again).
only a couple of things i would really like made. A midi out that works. and a wav recorder in it one day.. can always dream (think buzz has both)

loved trackers once, not using it that much now, i got too "close" to the host (non tracker) im using and can't do a s*** if im not using it
,
maybe a vst is the solution, im following revisit and berotracker (im a IT fan) , but they are not "there" yet, still i recommend it to everyone.

I don't use trackers, but I am curious. I thought a tracker was just a dedicated sequencer. Am I wrong about this? What is a tracker, and why is using one preferable to the sequencers in most hosts?
Thanks
