guitar necks - differences between bolted and set-neck

On my way to a camping trip in the summer of 2005, on a whim I bought a Lyon acoustic guitar at a Target store in West Virginia. It was a bit over $100, and I expected this guitar to be crappy, to last for the duration of a two week camping trip, and be useless after that. This guitar turned out to be *great*. As good as any laminated top guitar could sound, intonation correct enough to be a Yamaha or even a Martin, and since it was cheap, I had no reservations about letting people play it, or having it outdoors. It even came with a strap, a bag, extra strings, and picks. I ended up giving it away at the end of the trip, and I think the person who got it will be very happy. It was *far* better than I expected from a department store instrument!

When has an idea ever occured to a group? In a group discussion about a problem the idea for the solution always occurs to one person first. Somebody at Gibson came up with the solution.

Half true; it came up at two different places at the same time. Seth Lover's the person who came up with the design that Gibson used. When they applied for the patent, they stamped patent applied for on the bottom of the humbucker, hence the PAF designation that most people associate with the late '50s- early '60s Gibsons with humbuckers.

While this was going on, at the same time Gretsch had also filed for a patent with THEIR humbuicker concept called Filtertron. If I remember, that was developed in part at least by Paul Bigsby (the inventor of the Bigsby tailpiece), who was not a Gretsch employee.
