PSP Vintage Warmer is what I use most of the time. Works for me.

If you have the Scope platform then PsyQ and Optimaster are also very good an capable of high-end results.

For newbies? Izotope Ozone combined with the free pdf mastering guide they provide on their website.

Great survey. All the most mentioned choices are there. Unfortunately, most are so expensive you pretty much only really get know one of them unless you're made of platinum.

I'd say this shows where the KVR formus brand loyalties lie.

You are right. The question should have been "what compressor are you using for mastering".

That's not necessarily true since many of these have free demos. Any working mastering engineer has most likely gone through a good number, though I do submit it's unlikely anyone has gone through every single thing out there.

btw, Algorithmix should be added to the poll.

Somedays I use my Kjaerhus compressors. Somedays I use my Voxengo compressors. Somedays I just use MixPressor.

It all depends on the song.. and all the above-mentioned tools are different.

There's no one best anything for everything.

What are you talking about? They don't have a compressor.

Right, sorry! I forgot we weren't talking about all kinds of mastering tools here, just compressors.

I use digitalfishphones blockfish as my mastering limiter !
It beats the most i have tried in limiting.

I agree--it depends on the material and the sound you want, but some are definitely better at achieving the desired result than others.

i trust psp's compressor
Dynamic is improtant than the loudness.

I think many people collect a arsenal for the job rather then one plug. And find all the plugins in the arsenal to be suitable at different times (depending on material).
But definitely if i could have only one compressor it would be Voxengo's soniformer due to its flexibility and great sound. Its just more surgical then all others i've used.Soniformer and freeware and i think i'll get by just fine. But there are alot of fine compressors on that list that i don't have but others own and i'm sure do a great job with!No matter wich compressor ends up voted best its great to have alot of fine developers out here!

I find it very odd that neither Waves L2, L3 or L1 are listed in the survey, perhaps the progenitors of modern software mastering! Both the C1 and RenComp are generally not used nor intended to be used as mastering compressors (were you thinking of the C4?), and the LinMB would be used for multiband compression before the final limiter. If the L2 had been included in the survey, I would've voted for that: I still think it's the best.

And what the hell is that 'purple' thingy??

Post

bduffy,

perhaps you're missing the point. The survey is about *compressors*, not final output limiters. For the same reason kjaerhus audio and voxengo limiters aren't there. (except peak pressor, I've no idea what it has to do with mastering compression)

Although surely the line between the two is sometimes blurred. Still, almost all the choices in the survey are purely compressors first, and only feature limiters as secondary options.

If we compare limiters, then most of these choices don't apply.
