A DAW is your PC/MAC, a host is your sofware.

according to the polls, he's asking about DAW's, not hosts....dont think he actually knows what he is talking about...

Well spotted. This place needs a sub-editor. You up for it?

please refer to this definition before commenting anything. If you find this wrong you can even dare to edit it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_audio_workstation

DAW is always a combination of hardware and software as far as a computer is concerned. 'Host' widely means, a software which supports VST/VSTi technology by steinberg
Tools are tools, they don't produce anything...

Exactly. A digital audio workstation can easily mean hardware or software. Whatever the official dictionary definition is.

Sony described ACID 6 as a Digital Audio Workstation but it is of course also a host. So which is it? Both. The proper definition may be based on hardware or a combo of software and hardware but clearly Sony were not talking about hardware or a combination of hardware and software but just software.

Poeple will use terms to describe whatever best suits them. Correct or not. I doubt Sony had a huge amount of complaints from people about not finding any hardware bundle with ACID 6 because of this comment...

"Upgraded Version of the Award-Winning Professional Music and Production Application Redefines the Digital Audio Workstation"
http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/news/S ... easeID=628

Surely this is not the first time that a software package has been described as a DAW. Correct? Maybe not entirely, but then again maybe now it is.

My earlier example with Reason clealrly illustrates how definitions can change over time. Whatever I or anyone else thinks the term DAW means, will not stop the sun from rising tomorrow :hihi: so it's really of little importance, an excercise in splitting hairs. I guess while the dictionary definition is different the usage of the term DAW clearly is now used for software as well as hardware.

Here is another example.

http://ardour.org/

Not saying it's correct but clearly it is and has been used to describe software only. Maybe using the term DAW for hardware only or software and hardware only, is becoming outdated as is the term softstudio as a complete environment for music making.

Interesting question. I use Cubase SX3 as my primary and use FL Studio 6 (patterning), Tracktion (quick and dirty) and Acid (loop heaven) on occasion. I use Reason 3 more frequently than those three, but never as a DAW, always as an instrument in ReWire mode. Considering a look at EnergyXT because of its popularity (must be something special about it other than the price)and apparent sound design capabilities. I am using Plogue Bidule for that purpose now.

As an actual DAW, I use WaveLab with FW410 converters.

WHATEVER.

You still forgot the most awesome host software of all time:

BABYA Logic Pro.

I don't use eXT as a stand alone host very often, I use it in other apps more often...nor do I have a secondary DAW for that matter. I have FL6, AA2.0, eXT, and Sonar5 for hosts...as DAW stands for "Digital Audio Workstation" these hosts plus all my pluggings and such make up my DAW. I guess if I was to say I have a secondary DAW it would have to be my Akai dps12 Hard disk recorder, but I just use that as a digital mixer now...:)
