everyone should have a red box, it should be standard issue yeah, like pick-ups that were designed before the color tv are going to sound better than today's state of the art pick-ups...IIRs wrote:A DI box would be a cheaper solution of course.. and sound better!Hink wrote:
of course there is one other option...a low z guitar...

Well - your soundcard might catch up all the noise. As said, the noise in your file sounds like some computer noise, rather than like the usual high gain amp noise.

AKG don't make D12's anymore, they make D112's instead.. which suck IMO.

I'm mostly using an Anderson without a hint of any shielding. Yet it's the most noisefree guitar I ever owned. But then, I'm using humbuckers only anyways.

shielding takes about 10 minutes
....you might never know the good it does...in fact you shouldn't...but Greg said it all...in his apartment...depending on the situation and frequency just a foot can make a huge difference...it's commonly known as "the picket fence effect"...so if you're playing out it seems wise to go ahead a shield it for that one night at that one place...but of course nothing is perfect, but there is no negative side to shielding. So don't break your guitar just to shield it, I don't blame you....but if you're like me you will replace a pot or switch and if you've got it apart anyhow
...besides, that's how they get in your brain...they travel in through the cracks with no shielding, soon these aliens carefully disguised as waves attach themselves and start to form PODs (and you thought it was line six
), they're slowly taking over and no one cares...that's what area 51 is....area 51...51/50...coincidence? I think not...dont say I didn't warn you...I heard greg sleeps under aluminum foil sheets

I'm pretty sure the simulanalog stuff simulates the noise present in the original amp circuitry - I have an actual JCM900 and I can tell you it makes a lot of noise by itself.
It's a feature! And in a mix, it really isn't a problem.
Awesome plugins, btw... I wish they'd do a bass amp simulation.

They did, and a whole lot more guitar amps and pedals well. It's called Amplitube 2 and Ampex SVT.dub3000 wrote:Awesome plugins, btw... I wish they'd do a bass amp simulation.

(the simulanalog dude was hired for IK multimedia developments long time a go)

I would bet its completely shielded,, with SHIELDING paint.. IM not familiar with Anderson, but if it is even a middle of the road guitar it HAS shielding, maybe not copper tape or the metal plates like gibson, but it is sprayed with a shielding paint for sure, otherwise every 2 steps you took , your guitar would be picking up differently,(I.E "If I stand with my foot pointing left and not right, there is no hum, but if I turn it right it buzzes like a mo-fo..") And humbuckers can hum just as much as a single coil, DOnt forget it is only cancelling 60 cycle hum, which is the most common frequency of electronic hum (lack of a better word) BUt there is plenty of other "hum" that can be at 100 cycles or wherever....Sascha Franck wrote:I'm mostly using an Anderson without a hint of any shielding. Mark - you say that you have 16 years of playing and are "up to snuff" with quality gear ... but you aren't demonstrating any knowledge of how to use quality gear.
YES - the POD has a very good noise gate. That will be fooling you. Learn how to turn it off, because noise gates don't solve noise problems - they only hide them. The noise is always there where it matters - when you are playing. It fks with the note attacks and notes tails, and hum/buzz beats against your note harmonics - noise kills good tone, and gates only hide the noise when you aren't playing.
Software amp sims are only work on the signal you feed it. If you have noisy pickups and cables, poorly matched impedance (e.g mixer) and a noisy soundcard, then you a sending a lot of noise to the amp sim.
EMG pickups are low-z - so you could actually use the mixer if you had EMG's. But ideally you want a great clean DI box, and a great A/D converter. An Avalon U5 or Radial JDE into a Lucid AD9624 or Benchmark or Lavry would be nice.

YEah I must say when I had a guitar that came equipped with Emg's they sounded best when going direct, than any of my other guitars, with passive pups
