I think you're misinterpreting me. I'm not encouraging hostility towards those who don't want to join. I'm saying it's not usually worth an open source volunteers time to persuade a commercial software developer to port their products.
ah, yes, that's right. i forgot. one way to interpret "f**k 'em" is as "it's not usually worth an open source volunteers time to persuade a commercial software developer to port their products."

This thread went downhill fast.

Anyway, let me throw in a thought. It's hard not to be a little exhuberant when you start to use Linux and you see where it's going. (And it's hard not to be a little defensive when you're around people who are overly exhuberant.)

It will take some time still for Linux to become mainstream, but judging by what has happened during just the last two years, it may not take as long as some people think. This will open up new oportunities (except, perhaps, for Microsoft). Soon it will be profitable for the larger companies, like Yamaha and Steinberg, to release commercial software for Linux (many large corporations already support open source development for Linux). Those who see this coming, like the brilliant Jorgen, will be a step ahead of the slow ones who don't.

And by the way, the people who are staying with Windows will benefit by more open standards, by some true competition for Microsoft, and by alternatives (if they ever want to jump ship to something other than a Mac). So all of us Linux users are helping Windows users, too, just by using Linux. (It's hard to not be exhuberant.)
TIME IS WHAT KEEPS EVERYTHING FROM HAPPENING ALL AT ONCE.

yes. partly my fault. sorry.

Well I had my share as well, sorry.
It just pisses me off when some first-poster comes here, multidirectionally unloads semi-aggressive spam and is gone like with the wind

Anyway, carry on :hihi:

sounds more like another one-sided marketing blurb to me (defending the "exuberance" of the other one), sorry ...

Seriously.
Well, seriously, there are many, many reasons to not buy Windows XP. Let me count a few off the top off my head:
  • Ubuntu is available (along with many other good distros) for $0.

There are a lot of great applications that run best on Linux (or only run on Linux) for $0.

GNU/Linux is inherently more secure than Windows XP.

GNU/Linux is also more secure because most hackers, malware, spyware, etc. attack Windows.

GNU/Linux can be more easily customized for the user or for the hardware. For example, just the Ubuntu project has Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu (along with side projects like Mepis). Other people completely customize the compilation of their Linux with distros like Gentoo.

Linux is no longer only for geeks. Ubuntu (and other distro improvements), OpenOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, The Gimp, Inkscape, Blender, Evolution, tons of media players, all the current support for cameras, scanners, printers (and things like ALSA, JACK, etc.) have changed all of that. A good Linux distribution can now give most users all the power they need (for $0).

With GNU/Linux, you are part of a revolution. You are part of a community of volunteers and corporate developers (and hardware vendors) who believe that software is best when it is, at the very least, based on open standards.

With GNU/Linux, devs can see more than just a partial API (they can see everything).

We finally have an OS that is separate from the applications, where application developers can truly play on a level playing field and not feel constantly threatened by a giant monopoly that could take their business model away from them at any minute.

    Linux is terribly addictive.

    Microsoft needs a little competition.
Congrats to Jorgen for being wise enough to be an early commercial developer to support Linux (this, along with XT, shows that he truly is one of the smartest people on the planet).
Ubuntu is a CPU-eating Windows XP "wANNABe" at best. The apps that it has are laughable when compared to Windows XP.

The problem is that its fancy for a group of people to attack something thats in the spotlight. They want attention. They want to be the "revolutionaries" fighting for a "cause".

Tell me, which audio sequencer runs good in Linux? Dont make me laugh. First, you'd have to sort out all the problems, then look for something that WORKS (in the first place), then stability issues, and trouble shooting errors, then, oh wait, the sequencer cant do 1/100th of what windows/mac-running sequencers can do, even if you somehow managed to get it to work decently!

For all the folks, (who btw, probably spent more money on drinking, smoking, movies, hipeety hopeety car sounds, etc.,) who cant spend around 100 dollars, you deserve linux. No, you dont use linux. YOu DESERVE it. If you dont see that spending around 100 bucks can get you EVERYTHING you want, then you deserve to pull your hair out, try figuring out what went wrong and laugh like clowns saying "HahA! I dont need to pay for my OS! hAha!"

The ONLY advantage i see for the existence of linux is to provide some sort of (laughable) competition for Windows XP. Its good to know that incase microsoft steals your money, kidnaps your kids and kills your wife, you can always go to the pretty penguin for advice. :P

On another note, congrats to jorgen for trying to develop XT2 for linux. Let those poor musos using linux get a taste of what a "real" sequencer is. ;)

Don't hold back man, tell us how you really feel :P

Hey everybody is entitled to their opinion, and if you prefer WindowsXP that's great. I personally find your ignorance is pretty blatant here, but I'm not trying to sell anything. Honestly that somebody considers anything in this thread 'marketing' is baffling to me. Let's grab a handy definition shall we?

Market
Function: verb
transitive verb
1 : to expose for sale in a market
2 : SELL

As you're all aware, Linux (and Ubuntu) is free. That means: not for sale. Hell, I'm not even trying to persuade anybody to use it, and neither was anybody else. Paul was essentially answering your question, Dana was just letting us know that the Ubuntu Studio team are stoked for XT2, and I've just been trying to explain why you're acting like an ignorant c**t ;)

But I'm done feeding the trolls for now. The nice people on the ubuntu forums would be more than happy to help you discover what you're missing, if you're ever interested.

Community spirit applies only to those who are part of the community. If steinberg/yamaha etc are refusing to be part of it, why should the linux community give a f**k about them?
well, look, say someone doesn't want to join the linux community but the community could benefit from them joining. it would be a better idea for the community to continue trying to reach out and persuade than to simply say "f**k them," wouldn't it?
Yes, because that worked so well for the gamers who continued to reach out and persuade Blizzard to port Starcraft to Linux... Now look at what has happened. They hate Linux, they hate Linux users, they port their games like WC3 and WOW, but don't release them to Linux users, and so on. There is a point where Linux users constantly "reaching out" and "trying to persuade" a company to consider the platform becomes annoying and harrasment.

bernhardtjeff wrote: since when is the "linux community" about being so hostile towards those who don't want to join?
I don't understand that either ... If arrogancy against other platforms or vendors is the way to win someone over to UbuntuStudio then that failed, at least with me.
I wasn't being hostile. But why would I bother worrying about Yamaha or Steinberg if they don't worry about me? That's all. It's not hostile, it's not arrogant, it's nothing more than what it is. I buy Yamaha gear, I love it. But I assume they make software because it's been mentioned by someone else here that they don't care about Linux, hence why I used them as my example, and so I don't care about their software. There are people right now trying to run Reason and other Windows apps on Linux using Wine, and that makes no sense to me. If I wanted to support a company with my money by purchasing their Windows-only software, I would not be trying to run it in Linux, I would install Windows. Doesn't that make sense? But since many Linux users are moving AWAY from Windows, not the opposite, then this isn't the path we're going to take. We'll buy what runs on Linux, and run that on Linux.

I am not a spammer, and I haven't gone anywhere. You guys read too much into my possibly poor choice of words. But then, I didn't expect Windows zealots to be posting flamewars with Linux zealots in a Linux thread.

For me to stick around here and post as much as you do is stupid because I have nothing to post about - the software doesn't run on my platform. I registerd to show my support for the Linux port, and that's all. I wasn't intending to have you guys call me a spammer, a deserter, or whatever the hell else you wanna call me.

Funny that I'm the spammer by showing my support for this port, and yet keyman_sam can come in here saying whatever shit he wants because he's been here longer and runs Windows, and you guys are fine with that.

keyman_sam, don't make the same fault and let you sucker into these platform debates.
All platforms are available, everyone is able to choose what he/she likes. Period.
You're being just as unfair as the one who started to take this thread down.

Let's (everyone) just keep the topic about XT2/linux and not about how much one hates the one or other platform, k? It's not helpful in any kind otherwise.

Just so you know - One of my older computers ran Ubuntu Linux. I HAVE used linux. After my lil' "linux" experience, i went "Fcuk Linux. Now i know why everyone runs Windows/OSX".

I'm outta this thread. Sorry for getting the thread slightly OT.

Peace out.

keyman-sam, you are entitled to your opinion. But before deciding to throw around insults you should perhaps consider who you are hitting with them.

hint #1: Jorgen has clearly stated more than once that he likes using Linux (and he uses Ubuntu) as much as he likes using XP.

hint #2: you are Jorgen's guest here in this forum.

Read again what you wrote - do you think there might be something in your posts in this thread you should feel a bit embarrassed about?
