Dilema: Dual Xeon or Dual Core system ?

A 3.2 dual core can be had for around $350. A Tyan board to run it will cost $3-400. This gives you a great board that will last for years and the option to add a second processor with minimal fuss. Approved memory runs at about a hundred for a 512 chip. If I were to shop... I could come up with it cheaper. I think it's worth the cost.

A standard single CPU motherboard costs anywhere from $75-$150. A dual CPU motherboard costs usually at least $350 (The dual dualcore supported Xeon motherboard from SuperMicro cost $650+) So go ahead and spend an extra $200-$500 for something you MIGHT do? If you are for SURE going forward with it, then spend the money. But with chipsets changing fast, and featuresets changing fast, nothing lasts for 'years' anymore, unless you want to live in the past. Also, a $100 for 512? Ouch. Most 512 sticks, of course depending ont eh speed, run from $30-$80. Heck, for around 100, you could have 2 gig with some speeds.

I'm glad you're rich, and have money to burn. This isn't the first time I've seen you recommend something more expensive. Most people around here, $200-$500 is a month's salary. Not a good investment, IMHO. To each their own, I guess. To me, I'd think it's better if you 'think you might maybe' upgrade, just go with the single CPU motherboard, and when you're ready, buy a new motherboard. The $75-$150 you waste will be somewhat made up by the lower price the motherboard you were eyeballing at the time will be going for. There will be some upgrade pains in comparison to having a dual core mobo already, but some pain is etter than wasting hundreds on something that might never come to fruition.
