But you do have Logic - surely one of the most powerful midi environments there is - streets ahead of Cubase and most other DAWs for midi.

This is the reason why I'm sticking to Logic 5.51 on PC. I'm often tempted by newer stuff, but with it's Environment Logic is unbeatable MIDI wise.

With the current crop of dedicated harware sequencers (P3, Schrittmacher, Zeit, MAPS, Octopus), it's hard to understand why we don't see more creative development of MIDI softwares. I would expect to see lot's of software step sequencers ... but nothing, almost.

Yeah only reason I'm not using Logic on my main DAW is it won't run on 2 GIG Ram (plus I decided I didn't want to use anything dongled on that machine either so its just on my old one)

I was frustrated earlier today when I needed to work with sysex material, and some sysex stuff that was in ".mid" files, and of course, neither of the
audio programs that I use today (FLS and eXT) will touch this stuff.

Midi-OX solved all my problems for me though.

Perhaps not exactly what you're looking for but CAMPS (Computer Assisted Music Processing System) is a midi-only sequencer/compositional tool with some interesting features:

I totally agree. This was the first sequencer I ever used back in the day and I really miss it. There is actually a devote band of followers on a yahoogroup forum. Unfortunately, it relies on OMS midi drivers which are no longer available, particularly for XP. I'm not sure if they figured something out for OSX or not.

i think these are MIDI only. most seem to integrate both audio and MIDI.

I still use an older MIDI only sequencer from MOTU called Freestyle. It has a number of cool features including extracting tempo information from rubato preformances. I think you can still find a demo of it circulating at Shareware Music Machine or by digging around the MOTU FTP. Last version was 2.31. Win/Mac. Runs OK under XP.

You also might want to check some of the old Atari platform sequencers, still used by some like FatBoy Slim. You can run these under an Atari emulator. That last might be a problem though, the way you intend to use it.

thanks! the utilities you linked appear good but are only refered to audio/mp3 and fixed bpm's appear to be. Appear that the freestyle midi feature for tempo sense is something unique.

freestyle's tempo detect is also based on midi, not audio
