appreciate the suggestions dunder. for m-s I need an omni and figure 8? unfortunately I only have one mic that can do omni at the moment, but I do have an omni and a figure 8.

Sure you can use the picture William.

I fooled around with various set-ups (using my favorite mic types) And I accidentally stubled on the fact I could get a decent stereo decode with any directional microphone for the mid and either a figure 8 (keynote-drum roll) or an omni for the side. (the accident was I was in a hurry and screwed in the wrong capsole before I shoved it into the windscreen). Doing sound-for-picture, the omni worked better then the figure-8.
The key to this is that you use a directional mic for the mid-pickup. As I was experimenting with recording stereo dialog, my mid microphone was a hypercardiod patterned head.
I adapted the technique further using a long shotgun with an omni lav as my 'general-purpose' sound gathering mic... worked a charm and I used that setup for several years.

for setting up multiple mics on one stand (up to 7!) making it easier to setup any of the closer-patterned pairs.

Can you tell us what mic/preamp were used for this?

Thanks for sharing!
What ever!

Thanks for sharing that William. :)

The preamps are the two that are built in to the EMU 1616m soundcard and the mics were equitecks, an e300 and e100.

Maybe you could do a full CD of ambient sounds, I would buy it.

An ambient sample CD would be a fun project. Unfortunately my equitek E300 has become a bit noisy and I will need to send it to get it fixed/replaced. That is the best mic I have for ambient recordings. I would want that mic to be tip-top condition if I were doing samples for profit.

People stare when I record in the field. It's not big deal though, just part of the atmosphere.

Thanks again for the interest. :)

Maybe you could get one of those portable recorders? That fits on the pocket and uses flash-cards? M-Audio has a nice cheap one.
