Take a look at Vaz 2010.

The best analog synth sound for your computer....still !

It's not only for weired texture and FX sounds, also got excellent alias-free synth sounds.
This synth can rival Virus C as a synthesizer in the conventional sense.
Absynth can make some MEAN V/A sounds but it doesnt sound like a virus at all - anti-aliasing being one of the reasons :)
Yeah, but you can always turn anti-aliasing off per oscillator if you so desire...

A spectral heretic...

i learn something new every day.

I'd vote for zebra2

I know Urs developes it to replace his virus ;-)

and it can do almost every sound you want.

another unmentioned idea would maybe be virsyn TERA.
sound is vibration, vibration is life

Why nobody mentions Ultrasonique and other evm synths?

Zero Vector, Zebra 2, Tera 3 or Vaz would be my top options if you like the virus sound (personally I think they all sound better).
Also Spectra sounds very good but I dont know if it would be good for harsh sounds, Albino 3 (especially with the new filter options) is worth a look.

huge thanks for this, I think Zebra 2 might be the one when it's released, as long as it has an awesome distortion I can use for huge acid type sounds. I will try it again to see.

I am a huge fan of u-he's work, and he has produced the best antialiased oscilators I've ever heard (along with Minimonsta and the Korg stuff).

The VAZ synth has some of the worst oscilators I've ever heard, sorry, don't get me wrong, it's a great synth, but it really needs better oscs :D

Thanks to everyone for contributing to this, please keep it going, this info is very valuable.

I must admit that I find it surprising that some people have actually liked software VSTis better than the Virus, but then again, I've never tried the Virus so I can't compare.

I might actually go over to a music store and give it a try myself to see what all the fuss is about

And P.S. here's a sample of a track I've just finished. Please note that this is a part from the start and end of the track mashed together in the middle ar about 27 secs, you'll notice it changes over a little abruptly.

http://www.users.on.net/~djbros/SoundPa ... Sample.mp3

Things to notice...
- I worked my butt off mixing this :D
- The hard sync sound (its actually distortion with a highly resonant filter, sync didn't work well enough)
- The bass line
- The pad that kicks in on the 2nd half

All synths are Synth1, needless to say I was amazed by this synth, but still wish to have that sync lead even harder and more harmonically rich ... I would love the pad to give that extra little magic you hear in above & beyond tracks, and I would love the bass line to be a little beefier.

I've owned a Virus for a year and sold it very recently. Not that I didn't like its sound, but personally, I don't find such a difference in quality compared with some VSTis.

Of course there are sounds you'll only get with a Virus that you won't get with any other synth. But the same happens with Absynth (you won't get with a Virus many sounds you'll get with it) or with any other synth, VSTi or not.

As for me, I sold my Virus, I bought an X-station and Vanguard, I use the x-station as an almost perfect controller for Vanguard (and some other VSTi synths such as Synth 1, Wasp, Polyiblit etc) and I don't miss my Virus in any sense.

but as always, bear in mind: what works for me doesn't necessarily work for you, and viceversa. Or maybe yes, one can never know without trying.

soundpalace that's a very good mix!

I agree about the disto sound, could be "fatter" - have you tried xhip or Triangle II for that?

Huge thanks for the comments, I can't say that I have tried those for the distorted sound, I'll give it a go right now

I've seen a couple mentions of ZeroVector here, but so far, no response from you as to whether or not it'd be a viable option.

Out of all the VSTIs I've tried, I'd say it's the most comparable. I'm not sure why it doesn't get mentioned much, perhaps it's a bit pricey as far as software synths go.

Some really lush sounds can be made out of it. The clone dial for each oscillator, plus the global unison control, can can make for some pretty fat sounding leads and basses.

The included effects aren't exactly top-of-the-class, but they can hold their own. (Well, perhaps not the reverb... but it's still better than Vanguard's reverb! )
