Yeah, dead! Unless you multisample each patch at decent note intervals AND at several velocities AND possibly with several settings of the mod wheel AND take the time to build sample banks that take advantage of the different modulations you have sampled, your songs will sound dead. No life. Muerte. Tot. Gestorben. Död. Mort. You get my drift?

The point of a VSTi is playability - to add expression to your playing using any and all of the available controls (velocity, CC#!, CC#11, aftertouch, et cetera, et cetera...)

Many VSTi patches have dramatic changes of tone color as you tweak the MW or CC#11. How would your dreamt up automatic sampling process be able to figure out which tone colour you prefer?

This whole idea seems completely daft to me... :-o

I need some single shot samples for underground Techno/Trance. I usually need many of such sounds. Having a set of samples, allows me to quickly use them in my songs. Doing this with VSTi, I would have to create like 10/20 VSTis which will kill my cpu and create timing issues.

If I need some modulation, I still use VSTi or add an effect plugin. But alot of the times, modulation is not necessary in my music style. :)

This is a completely different story than what you told us on page 1. And for one-shots you often don't really need multiple keyboard and velocity layers...

Just pick the patches you need, and record a sample. Simple. Just do it, you lazy bum!
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Image

I thought "one note" and "single shot" meant the same. I don't know what is different.

Lazy?, then you can spend a month recording one patch at a time.

...if you really need only one note then it is just an afternoon's work. tell me what synth do you want and I show you how much you'll get in half an hour. wow, what should people say who spend hours, days, weeks or months with recording sample libraries. again, for your task using either EXSC3 or Ableton Live (if this may be one of your host) will do it...

...and don't get me started to think about if it wouldn't be better to write your monophonic three note trance bassline, hit freeze, load up the next VSTi and write the next line...

i think nothing will AUTOMATICALLY convert a WHOLE BANK...

MANY will do one preset at a time...SampleRobot can do it (and also auto-loops it), also EXC (no autoloop at the moment) and HighLife...and i think I am forgetting something I have never tried...

How does this actually work?

I mean, if you've got a synth-based VST that has filter sweeps or something, wouldn't the timing of the LFO's/filter then become "hard coded" into the wav file and if layered sound "not right" because the synch of some of the internal sound generators is off?

Is this making sense at all? I know it's a theoretical question - in reality does it make a difference?

Thanks for any input,

- Paul
