Well if you got a be assimilated into the new world order at least back up all the drivers and software you have, and don't upgrade just buy a new computer in a couple of years, and use it as a guinea pig. but please don't dare tamper with the XP revolution. This is truely the begginning of the golden soft age, think of all the virus battles, software battles, hacker battles,driver battles, etc. that have been established with XP. I'm for linux, and Mac but remember money controls the flow, and people have choices besides Vista, thier worth about 90 billion they might lose 2 billion if we hold out for about two three years.
Remember they love money, they will make it more compatible my brothers.

How did this turn into a hate microsoft conversation, Bill Gates and Steve job need each other, and Kong Audio is a hater, No matter what Super computer the chinese make, We in America, Germany, and the U.K. etc. will program it, and sell it back to you.

Didn't I read this same thread a couple a years ago when 98 SE was the shit and XP was being shoved down our throats?

Shouldn't we at least give Microsoft some credit for creating a standard that gave the PC industry a focus? As stated taking the whole PC revolution out of the hands of the geeky things for geeky people and adding grandma and grandpa to the equation.
I'm constantly amazed at how much PC's have changed the home studio in a relatively short period of time and fear we would not be as far along without the consumer focus.

Developers are still able to create something better, and we have the option to use it. I think we have all benefited and I would hate to go back to were Pro Tools was my only choice.

If Vista is the next step in the evolution then I say Yeah!
Then when somebody develops some new toy I gotta have I'll probably upgrade.

It sure can't. If you just want to press the "ON" button and get work done, Linux cannot provide that, not now and most assuredly not ever. Every version I've tried were buggy and lacked what I now consider basic functionality; and users friendliness? If I have to take a six month course just to be able to operate the OS for simple thing like installing drivers (a simple double-click on Window)or programms and adjusting my screen resolution, then if that's my only option I'll just stop using computers altogether.

There's only really two alternative for OS for audio/video workstation, Apple or Microsoft, and if you want to be able to choose your components instead having them chosen for you, then there's really only one, which is most unfortunate but it is the way it is.

My goal is to simply get my dream setup:

Tracktion2 (or 3)
GURU
Vanguard
thats it, and maybe a few free synths and soundcard/midi controller

Before everything:
1) is changed from XP to Vista(unlikely)
2) is upgraded to a new version that requires more system requirements
(by the way, do companies offer older versions of their software at cheaper prices upon request?)

And once i get that, a soundcard, and midi controller, i'm set.
It's all just finding new samples and ideas from there.

Vista can kiss my balls, i'm still just trying to get a decent setup on XP! (possible signature nomination?)

The sad thing is, XP does run quite well but there are a lot of thing that begged to be improved; the audio/video CODEC situtation, for one, is a complete mess, you install a programm, work fine, install another that comes with his own set of codec...whooops, the first one's now broken

; the registry and what programms are allowed to do to it is another and the programm installer...why do we even need such a thing, and why are programm installer even allowed to write files outside of their own directory, all over your HD as a matter of fact, to begin with. I could go on and on but it would be pointless.

Unfortunately, all Microsoft did with Vista is add more bloat over the top instead of streamlining and making the OS more secure and efficient. There really isn't anything desireable in the new OS except maybe eye candy, but even that does get old pretty fast.

Vista, is just a phase
