The electronic parts for a single channel 1176 cost around 30€ (without transformers). :-) The most expansive thing in my DIY Dual Channel 1176 were the VU meters.

yeah well I counted in all the metal work, PSU, knobs, pots and I/O. still, 300e is peanuts for a stereo unit which you can customise to taste and very likely end up with a better sound and more flexible controls than those coming from the UA factory.

oh and those great sounding OEP transformers are what 7e each. :D

Do you prefer OEP to the cleaner type? I'm thinking about swapping the input iron (Edcor at the moment) for something darker... Which one from OEP do you like best for this application?

Post

I'd really like to customise this :D. I was reading about AKM converters and somehow "stumbled" upon it :D. "Nice" link...

Sorry for OT.

This is getting really interesting . Do you know about Gyraf.dk website? Some really nice DIY designs there.

I've only experience with OEP, and I know they impart a rather "rough" color. I can't really comment on that further. AFAIK lundahl is transparent/boring and less suited for a hard-ass compressor like the 1176, but I've yet to test it meself. I wish we had better import of Edcor around here. Right now it's near impossible to get them here. Probably the same with getting OEP stateside.

I thought there was only one OEP model suited for the 1176 by the way. I can't remember the exact type but I thought it was the 1:2 ratio one. (they only have about 5 models anyway so you can't go wrong).

see you at prodigy pro I suppose. :)

yep. might I invite you to http://www.prodigy-pro.com/forum/index.php

It's the best place there is for this type of DIY stuff and Jakob/Gyraf is actually a moderator there. :)

off topic but yeah that was some super hot linkage there. :hihi:

nuffink, do know of PCI cards or standalone converters using the Ti1794a chip you mentioned earlier?

Just curious.

None that I know of. There are a few DIY kits about if you google PCM1794 (without the a).

Some found examples:

http://cgi.ebay.de/Sweet-Sound-DAC-PCM- ... dZViewItem
http://www.kingsound.co.kr/files/product/rp0523191.htm

The exact DAC chipset is not commonly advertised, so it might be used in your SACD player, DVDA player or RME card...

Nice find Bert.

But...
The output stage is fully discrete (No Op-Amps), using one transistor per channel, ensuring excellent sound and robust output.
...how to f**k it up in one easy go.

You can get Edcor here via Tony db (that's where I got mine. Do a search for XS1100 at prodigy.

As for the OEP trafo, are you talking about the input or output trafo? I'm using 1:2 Haufe at the output, and I'd rather keep it in. For the input a 1:1 should be better suited, shouldn't it?

If I remember correctly (don't have the schematic at hand) the 600 ohm 1+1:1+1 model suits both the input and output.

I'd want it hand painted by Picasso for that money.

This thread is boiling hot! Thanks for the links! Especially for Prodigy-Pro forum Kingston, see you there and thank you Bert for nice links, too. Now I have a lot of new material to absorb .

It's almost disturbing how much you can do these days with some pocket money, internet, soldering iron and some spare grey cells :D.

KvR forever,

Cheers!
