seamoss wrote:The song seems a bit unfocused. It has sporadic changes and dynamics that seem unnecessary and IMO....make the song hard to listen to. Kingston mentioned being careful about the production "trickery" and I completely agree. This song reeks of it.
I guess it's a matter of taste. Personally I don't know of any music that I'd consider to be over-produced. Any pointers? I want to hear the format, I want to hear the studio!

seamoss wrote:I love the first break with the mellotron but I think the arrangement is weird and the chorus comes way too early. I also think the chorus is being played too many times. It might not be so bad if you had some more verses. Can't your sister sing/write some more?
I wrote about this in the Day 5 narrative. I agree that there's probably not enough vocal material in this song. That's something we'll be working on for next time.

seamoss wrote:The snare sound is notorious. I am all for having a snare sound that's different but it should work and this one just annoys and aggravates me. :bang: Maybe you can fix this in the mixing. :?:
"Notorious"? Do you mean it has notoriety, or you just don't like it? If you don't like it, what's wrong with it? What would you change?

seamoss wrote:I do like the guitar chords in the track but I think they are too low in the mix and I also think they sound a little thin. This could be because you are using an amp sim. Got a real amp laying around anywhere? ;-) Guitar part reminds me of something off Coldplays first record although theirs sounding quite a bit warmer. Think Portishead or something 8) - great guitar tones there.
Again, this is probably a matter of taste. I deliberately made those guitars thin and low in the mix because they're just there to add texture and colour. They're not meant to be a feature (or even audible, really). It's the same with the four-part choir and the three distorted percussion parts. It's in the background.

She loves it now.

Actually, there are some naked vocals in the Day 2 audio. Tempo is 120BPM. If you're interested, get started with that. If there's enough interest here, I'll post the raw takes.

I was going to do this today, because I like this girl's voice...and I just got a new mix to do of course..im not complaining about getting work..but I want to get some down time to have fun with stuff like this too.

How can a snare be "notorious"?!! Perhaps he means the snare from "Notorious"?

Listening to the last couple versions...the stereo width automation was really dramatic when it comes out of the break! Now that I've heard it, I find myself craving a little more stereo action in the rest of the song, or at least the choruses; not sure what the final plan is there. Great song though, looking forward to the final mix. :D

Day 8

Music Cafe topic (with download).

That's it! Just a little eq and dynamics to bring it closer to a commercial sound. I didn't slam this one quite as hard as Undone, because the aesthetic is more Massive Attack or Lamb than Garbage or Gwen Stefani.

Ok, I've consolidated all the diary entries into a single post at the top of the first page of this thread. Now it's really easy to copy the paste the text, change a few names, and pass it off as your own. :hihi:

By the way, there probably won't be another production diary from me for at least another month. I've got a film trailer project coming up and a couple of other projects I've been neglecting.

Cheers for sharing that Kim. Its interesting to listen to how another person works and absorb a little of what they hear. :)

I must have removed the files from my server a while ago (the song was originally recorded three years ago!). I'll upload them when I get back to the studio.
