Glad to help. Save a copy for me, alright? Can't wait to get my hands on this thing!
... (Well, we'll see the price tag first!)

For the Tommy Lee Sound... three songs, three pretty different sounds... lets vote here:
Primal Scream
Hooligans Holiday
Kickstart My Heart

tell me which drum sound you think is best and why

Post

I'll listen to those right now.

OK, jury's in (and a little tipsy with sore necks from headbanging):

+1 for "Kickstart". (Although Dr. Feelgood would be my first choice.)

Just to reiterate... :)

Uhmmmmm, cast your votes, people? :D

Mine goes for the "Primal Scream" / "Hooligan's Holiday" sound: Contemporary, slammin', definitely very Tommy Lee and, very importantly, very useful in a wide range of rock/metal applications.

If the approach is more modern... Well, there you go, the choice is clear, Dave! :hihi:
So that's +1 for "Hooligan's" and +1 for "Primal Scream".

To me, the sound in "Kickstart" is showing its age (and not aging well, at that) - it's very, VERY dated, it just screams 1980s. IMHO, anyway.

Post

Yeah..heh heh...guess I'm showing mine too!

I agree it's a bit dated, but I think a) it has shitloads of energy, and it'd be hard to imagine anything else on this track and b) most importantly, it's an excellent example of balancing the drums, drum samples and reverb in a mix. I love how the reverb seems to flow "behind" the kit, not getting in the way; excellent mixing.

But dated as hell, yeah! God, I love 80's drum sounds...

Hey, at least it's not Chicago. "You give meaning to my life/you're the inspiration..."

Haha! Yeah, I agree it's a great sound. It's just that I don't see any real use for it, unless I were asked to write the soundtrack for an 80s revival show or something.

AAAGHGH!! OK! Let's be clear: I don't like ALL 80's drum sounds! Not that "BOOOW...DESSSHHH!!" Simmons kick & snare that festooned every horrid Top-40 track from that era. No, I like the late-80's, early 90's-type layered sound. :D

Bleh, now I need a shower...

Actually, I could totally use that drum sound in my music, but I tend to go for pretty over-the-top production anyway. :D

I kinda dig the Hooligans snare, nice as slappy.

Crap, they're all good. :(

A working drummer's view here. +1 for Hooligans Holiday.

I agree on the snare, and add to that:

- The punchy, penetrating 'thud' of the bass drums, rounded out with a nice, big resonance (perfect to cut through a huge wall of layered guitars!). TL hits the bass drums with the PLASTIC side of the beaters, which gives a lot of higher frequency content to the attack.

- Also super punchy attack in the toms - This, I think, has a lot to do with the x-large plastic AHEAD drumsticks TL uses. I am guessing he uses dotted heads (or Pinstripes, perhaps?).

- I have always been a fan of TL's hi-hat sound, and it's particularly present in Hooligan's. I know he uses two heavy 15-inch bottoms. Gotta love that sound, dude!

- Last but not least, Bob Rock's engineering on Hooligans is the s**t!

I figured as much. I just couldn't resist a gated-reverb reference. :P
