congrats cain! I adored 5.2, it did all I needed, so I don't know why I moved to SX (but I am comfortable enough to hold at SX2)
Me too. I still miss VST5 even though I've been on SX for a couple of years now.
Not sure I'd like to work without some of the newer features, but the workflow in VST5 was so much better for me than anything in SX. I'd still be delighted if they released most of the new audio functions with an older VST type version. Too much of the excellent midi stuff was dumped with SX, and I still think the simple GUI with VST was streaks ahead of the SX rubbish - too many cryptic little diagrams on diddy little buttons that mean absolutely nothing to me. Audio really is so much better in SX, but I think they lost their way with workflow. :(

this is a bit off topic, but in cubase 5.1 is there any form of latency compensation in channels or groups? If not, is there a way to get readings as to the plugins' latency.
From memory - I don't think there was latency compensation in groups, but it was compensated on all other channels. As for readouts - can't remember... :?

Question: Cubase VST 32 - which I still use to my satisfaction on my Windows 98 system (think whateber you want) - does not seem to work on Windows XP (I tried on two different machines): any idea why?

Post

I didn't have any issues with it in WinXP and no problems with Vista32 either. Are you at least using the 5.1 update?

Post

Uhmmm, I'm not sure... I think it's 5.2, but I don't really remember. How do I find out?

Hi, Mac,

Doesn't it tell you in your Help => About..?

You can also go here: ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/ and have a look round - there are lots of old versions of Cubase there, for Mac & PC. :P

Can't find the info in "help" :(
The link is very interesting, thanks! I'll give it to my music partner, too (he's got XP, so we can't use the same version of Cubase), maybe there we'll find a way to solve the problem :)

Post

It's not in the Help menu - just click on Help and go down to About Cubase VST... That will tell you what version you're using, as in almost any software.

I don't know why you can't use Cubase VST in XP - I've been doing so for years. And I'm not the only one, as you can see from posts here.

Re the link, you're welcome. I hope it helps you. :)

The version # is displayed in the top right corner of the startup splash screen (which also appears when you click 'Help-->About Cubase..'

How exactly is it not working? Doesn't start? Crashes?

Have you tried running Cubase in Win98 compatability mode? You shouldn't have to, but might be worth a try if nothing else is helping.

Post

Ah, compatibility mode - that's the phrase I was looking for. Thanks Cyfyr.

Mac, here's a page from Micro$oft that may help you. Run Older Programs on Windows XP: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/usin ... ompat.mspx

Good Luck,

Guys, you're just great :) Thanks a lot for all the tips, we could finally solve my partner's (and my nephew's, too) problem :) This could also come in handy to me, too, in case I should move to XP!

Thanks a lot indeed!!

(by the way, I checked again carefully, but there's no indication of which version I have... could it be that it's the first one, so they didn't specify? Which brings me to question no 2: those ftp links you gave me, humanbean, are things you can download for free? Or are they just updates or something?)

Access to the steinberg ftp is free. But you need the dongle or serial or whatever copy protection they use in order to run the software.

For Cubase VST 5 you should have a dongle which they gave you the first time you bought the (boxed) version.

weird question but it can be useful for me and maybe for other rare ones..
if i own SX3...will the oldish VST/32-VST5 version work with the newer license on the dongle that came with SX?

Peace

I ran Cubase VST 5.2 on Windows XP Service Pack 2 without any problems for a long time, still do occasionally, when I need to open an old song.

At the time, I was using both a Mac and a PC with the same version of Cubase on them, ah, those were the days, both computers worked great only the Mac sounded like a small jet taking off and the PC I built was (still is) nearly silent.

You can transfer the license off the parallel port key, which I did, but once you do, you can't go back!

If you ever decided to sell your Cubase VST 5 to some lucky soul, you'll have to transfer the license to another USB key (and I've never tried that, it frightens me).

But back to the point, didn't have any trouble with Cubase 5.2 (last public beta) on Windows XP, didn't need to run in 98 compatibility mode, but took a bit of fiddling to get rid of the dreaded delayed MIDI noted syndrome that has plagued Cubase FOREVER. And still does. I managed to find the right combination of ignore filter blah blah, but it was the only troublesome part about the switch from Mac to PC. No MIDI timing problems on the noisy Mac, MIDI timing problems on the quiet PC.

Sigh.

Anyway, I agree with everything that's been said here, and it was actually the way that Steinberg burned VST 5 users without releasing a final update when they had said they would, and then did the same thing with SX 1 2 AND 3 that finally made me decide to forget Steinberg and stick at 3. I'm never upgrading to 4 unless a pile of money falls from the sky and lands at my feet.

But I'm not worried about that happening, as with my luck in life the pile of money will land on my head.

So instead, I'm watching Reaper grow, and meanwhile using SX 3, and while it's got its own problems, none of them bother me enough to move up to 4, and in yet more brilliant Steinbergian wisdom, they removed the ability to create more than one set of stereo ReWire tracks (an almost hidden, secret, and for sure flaky, trick in SX 3) in SX 4, and as I use Reason quite a bit, well, feh.
Antec P-case, Asus motherboard, AMD Phenom, 16gbRAM, 4 Hard drives, Windows 7 Ultimate, MOTU 828mkIII, Komplete 8, Maschine, Reason 6, Cubase 6, Blue Sky monitors(and a powerbook).
