Sound cards, are they really that important?

How to do this, that and the other. Share, learn, teach. How did X do that? How can I sound like Y?

No, but 1/4" jacks can be had on cards for around $75.

YES!!! Absolutely the most important link in the digital recording chain.
Consider that everything that you record passes through this piece of hardware twice. Once on the way in, and again on the way out. This is one area where you definitely do not want to cut corners! 'Nuff said...!
