Yep, you did    But it was fun :D Regarding the limitations to apply, my personal vote (and now I'm serious) goes to weird effects that really change the sound to the point of not being recognizable anymore (whatever you pass thru, say, Therapy comes out a totally different thing, while reverb, delay, chorus/flanger/phaser, compressors are perfectly acceptable), and - above all - sampling, because otherwise the instrument IS the sampler and not the synth... It'd be like partecipating to a guitar competition and present a piece made with a sampler and samples of a guitar: try that, and you'll be kicked out in no time. So yeah, for me that doesn't make sense at all and should be a rigid rule.

However, I'd like to suggest an idea for the sampling buffs out there: how about a separate competition called "One Sample Challenge"? You get only one sample, and you have to only use that, wouldn't that be fun?
:)

Post

You're stealing my idea... :hihi:

Seriously though, great idea! I've done this before, and I can tell you, it is indeed a challenge, one of the most aggravating things about it is: once you have a sound all mangled, it's pitch has changed to something unrecognizable and you need some kind of tuner to figure out what pitch it is so you can map it out chromatically and still be in tune with your other melodic lines. Good fun though. As before, I recommend short-circuit.

I'm up for a one sample challenge .... bring it on! :)

Meanwhile, how about a nice synth for the next challenge :help:

Fraid I haven't been able to get my vote and reviews done yet, and I'm gonna be out soon to the Subhumans gig .... been told I'm on the guest list .... which is cool :) .... so its all gonna have to wait 'til tomorrow once again!

Mmmmm if I'm right you never used GTG stuff here. Something like GTG 44 S or GTG MS 2008 will be perfect for a OSC :D (http://www.gtgsynths.com/plugins.htm)

Post

I've use GTG Sputnik, ... I like it a lot ... cheers for the suggestion Max, I'll try one of those others out tomorrow ... off out now, catch ye tomorrow. :)

Post

+1 for GTG stuff :)

Post

I'm happy to go with GTG 44S or MS 2008, but I think GTG Sputnik is a bit more of a challenge.

All three are cpu efficient.
All three have delay/reverb and chorus, so we would be able to limit additional fx to compression/dynamics plugs only .... if that is the general concensus. :)

Post

something tells me we should test it before we commit it to being an osc...

It seems GTG stuff is safe enough, Mik never uses external modules. Anyway just give it a try before :hihi:

I just tried Sputnik after Tatties suggestion - no problems with me and a very cool sounding synth. Also has that "oddness" that makes a good OSC candidate.

Fine by me anyway :D

Cheers,
Mouxbar

I'm Late (again), so much work to do -.- You know in the Place i am working we have to organize a triathletic Marathon which is more work then someone would think of...

Germanys 12 Points go tooooooooo: *tusssssch* Felix Goes to China by Yeager!
I like that. Reminded me of an old Game is used to play years ago :3

The Ten points would go to: PussyJoos-IIRs! Awesome playarround with the synth. But ah... there are no second votes.

Aight Points would have gone to: Gamma-ut's Summer Stalker!

------and thanks for the vote i got!! :)

a one sample contest would be awesome :3
So... Galileo died? Poor thing...
Whats next?

Ok, here are my thoughts/impressions :

4300-bridge-4305-4306-MrBlitz000 : nice organsound kind of interlude just before the progrock band kicks in.

4300-05to06-mrblitz000[1]-mrBlitz000 : musical interlude, I like the other one more (think it's because of the organ sound).

A_DIFFERENT_SKY---Mac_of_BIOnight : interesting from the fist note, nice melody and choice of sounds
I realy enjoy the theramin and the organ part (that break is fantastic) very musical.

Awakened_by_cats - James Of Tucson : nice sound design the flute is great and the end is funny (like they shot the fluteplayer).

Bangarang-ah_dziz : very glichy and atmospheric, good mix.

Cat Food - Mouxbar : Kraftwerkian start, nice sounddesign and mix.

Dr_Quandry - James Of Tucson : lovely soundscape and bassline somehow reminds me of "fade to grey".

Feline Groovy - Tattiemannie : Disco ! from the middle-east. lovely melodic, great sound !

Gently Puss - Mouxbar : nice chords, nice atmosphere.

Jan Lööf Would Be Proud -K-Bee : laid back computergamey, I like it!

Pampered Pussy (Meow Mix) - MadPsyance : very musical, like the bass-sound ! nice complex rhythmical patterns.

PussyJoos-IIRs : very solid mix, sounds and composition, the accordion like parts are lovely.

Summer Stalker - Gamma-ut : great atmosphere laid back reggea dub, only two (sampled) felix's wow! The middle royksopp bass part is to die for !

The_Midnight_Hunt_MA_Simon : windy musical box, the distorted orchestral part at the end is great.

Tweakers, Sneakers and Speakers - Eddie Pedalo : LOW ! mr. ozzio springs to mind. I like it.

Untitled_for_osc7 - marcusz : nice jazzy feel, too short, great bass-sound.

Was it a cat I saw? - Jon Boyd : eastern atmospherical, great organ arps and sound.

My absolute faves are : PussyJoos, A different sky, Summer Stalker, Was it a cat I saw and Feline Groovy.

Boiled down to two : PussyJoos and A Different sky.

And I went for PussyJoos.

Well done everyone, I enjoyed listening to all the tracks (over and over again) very much.

Thank you.

...a note about gain more interest in the OSC. In the Music Cafe there should be more people interested in listening to new stuff (and maybe provide more votes). Why not move the OSCs there?

OK, here's my take on things ....

Not all cats - Yeager ....Solid percs, and sounds remarkably like natural plucked strings, nice production!

4300-05to06 - Mrblitz000 ... Clever, engaging composition, short, only 2 sounds, but nice variation and progression.

4300-bridge-4305-4306 ... Only one sound, but one unlike any others in the comp. Again, short, but engaging throughout.

A different Sky - Mac of Bionight .... This is cool. has an eerie element and yet uplifting and relaxing. Lovely rich, strong sounds, and great interplay culminating in a gorgeous 'double' climax!

Bangarang - Ah Dziz .... Unusual sounds, strange, very appealling, atmospheric, thought provoking composition.

Cat food - Mouxbar .... Brickbat bass! Nice perc track/sounds. Love the 'bowed glass' arp. Varied use of Felix. 'drum' sounds could be stronger, but balanced by that big bad bass! ... Simple yet nicely varied composition

Dr Quandry - James of Tucson .... Rich fat airy pumping bass! .. a great sound! However the strength and the sense of purpose of this track is impressive to the point it promises a lot more.

Felix goes to china - Yeager .... Grabs me from the outset ... atari game/ tracker feel. Mad 'race/fight' dynamic. Beautifully percussive .... repetition adds to tension, suggestive of some sort of endurance battle. Love how the composition seems to alternatively tighten, and open up.

Gently Puss - Mouxbar ....warm, full chords, cold wind blowing, comfort vs melancholic isolation. Reminds me of a soundtrack for a luxury chocolate advert..... the darkness and sweetness combined.

Jan Loof would be Proud - K-Bee .... that sub 'whoomph' is very attention grabbing! ... sparse arrangement but rhythmic and compelling

Pampered Pussy - MadPsyance .... Great production .... like a game soundtrack in parts, love the abrupt staccato phrase breaking the track up ... reminiscent at times of the Siamese cats song from some disney film I fail to recall. The Meow sounds are great.

Pussyfooting - Yeager .... Percussive intro .. great kik, deliberate, punchy sounding bass, rich sounds. Nice breakdown, nice sounds overall, great nasal lead 2/3rds in, and strong composition overall.

PussyJoos - IIRs .... Production displays a lot of integrity re. space, and variety re. same. Theres a nice feeling of taken to and from the 'room' I like how different sounds become the focal point of the track at different stages in the track's progress.

Summer Stalker - Gamma-UT .... interesting mix of scratchy sound and elusive, shifty sounds like samples of radio at the start ... then a realistic drumkit enters the fray holding together a collection of interesting but strangely unrelated sounds? Then interupted by a bass which sounds like deep, dark laughter ... very interesting, and slightly puzzling montage of moods!

The Midnight Hunt - MA Simon .....radio tuning noises, cheap organ, bass guitar being rehearsed and disturbing glassy noises.
I find myself imagining a household wherein each member of the family is doing their own thing oblivious to the rest, and theres a microphone in each room connected to MA Simon's mixing desk, where he bravely attempts to make them functional!

Tweakers, Sneakers and Speakers - Eddie Pedalo .... Electronic kit sound, choppy, with abundance of attack ... gutsy, all pervading bass ... hypnotic, and entrancing. This wouldn't sound out of place in a night club on Ambient night. gets my head nodding and my shoulders doing little circles anyway!

Untitled - Marcusz - Dubby bassline, Tight dry percussive sounds. Carefree elec piano. Short, but engaging, and leaves an impression.

Was it a Cat I Saw - Jon Boyd ... Intro suggests sufi keyboard/ragga. A bit of didj to follow the harpsichord, and a suggestion of deep african sounding drums. Around the world in 4 minutes? Very hypnotic and cyclical, I find myself sinking into this track like I would a nice plump beanbag.

And the verdict? .... My vote goes to China! ... with Felix and Yeager!
It was very close, and on a different day it could have gone anywhere .... so I'm not even gonna attempt to name a small selection of runners up.

Not a lot of time left to vote ... get them in quick! :)
