Are you high? There are aspects of both that I like so I won't take the bait, but these two sound files sound very, very different to me and I'm just using cheap sony walkman style headphones into a crappy laptop internal sound card. Whether it's the nature of how the sound is being made, or the patch design that makes them different the only question I have. My guess is it's the patch design.

By the way, if #2 is actually a Synth Quad synth (which would explain the very Rolandish filter), then I'd be very excited as the emulation was nailed far better than I thought and I'm definitely buying at some point.

Well I don't know if you've switched the order since people started guessing but I definitely say"

1.Digital (3.8mb)
2.Analog (5.2mb)

My guess is that the first one is Zebra. In fact I thought that as soon as I started listening to it.

When I heard the second one, I could distinctly hear a difference. Especially in the middle and at the end with the snappy envelope filtered bits, it's like night and day.

Let me just say I'd love to be wrong! Especially if it was Zebra but I got them mixed up. But I'm pretty sure.

1. Digital. Sounds very good and polished, like good VSTis can nowadays.
2. Analog. A bit harsh, raw and limited in timbre like old analogs.

PS:
My first synth was a Roland Juno-106 back in 1985.

I'm not really sure, this is a hard one.

I'm a bit astounded how many people get this wrong. Even the designer of the VSTi in question admits that the good old analog synths still sounds a lot better.

Lets play

1- Analog
2- Digital

To me 1 sounds far better. Reminds me the way my own analog machines can sound.

This said, it might be possible to make analog sounds very average and digital sounds fine, isnt it ?

But 1 all the way

I agree that regarding certain settings both sound (briefly) rather similar. In drastic transitions, and extreme settings, I prefered one. By far.

Interesting test anyway. Thanks for the little game

Well, to my ears, there's quite a difference between the two and I far preferred the first one - just sounded a good deal meatier: the osc sync/phasey bit was particularly impressive. The second one just seemed quite polite in comparison.

I really hope that the first one is the VSTi, but I'd put money on the first being the analog.

(I haven't read anybody else's comments yet - I thought it better to write my impressions without being unduly influenced.)

Agreed, though a vst can sound distinctly better (more lively and varied) than that example. I guess that example was mostly to show it can technically do the same set of sounds rather than an effort to capture the aliveness.

2) digital

1st file sounded much better to me, especially in the bass department. the resonance in sound 2 also sounded "strange".

that's not to say there are no good digital filters (there are quite a few awesome ones now in my opinion)- and i even usually prefer the sound of good digital software synths over "true" analog sounds in most cases.

of course i might be wrong with my guess, since the differences between analog / digital emulations are not that big anymore (neglectably small in a song's context)
but i find it much easier to make powerful bass sounds with analog gear

Yep - listened again and I'm 99% sure that No 1 is the analog - and if it isn't I'll buy that VSTi!

Don't think it's a Juno 106 as someone mentioned - sounds better than that to me (and didn't the Juno have DCO's?).

I truly can't believe what I'm hearing. If 2 is a VSTi and I don't already have it, I want it. I think it's the analog one though. Listen to the sound of the envelope opening up at 1:40 (download it to see the time). Sounds very analog to me.

1 sounds fine, but nothing I feel like I can't do with soft synths like Zebra (indeed I think it is Zebra).
