If we can't email you via the automatic system we don't have time to manually send out 200-300 extra passwords every month - and anyway if we can't email you, we can't email you to tell you that the email didn't get through!!
And if you did, the extra cost would have to be reflected in the cost of the commercial vstis such as Electron, TauPro etc. As a paying customer, I say "No thanks!"
The patch area, ultimately, is a free service. It costs us a lot of money in bandwidth and a lot of time and effort to run it.
Here's a thought: why not put the monthly patches on
http://www.computermusic.co.uk/ in the CM Studio section? That way you wouldn't have to hassle with them, and we could get them. I know that the purpose of getting people to register is to introduce them to Muon, but maybe you could get a mention put on the monthly patch page like: "New monthly patches created by Muon, for more of their fine work, pls go to: www.muon-software.com" Or similar.

Wow sorry Dave,as usual I've opened up a can of worms for you.Wish I never started this thread now.Is it really worth all the headaches and work to password protect a handful of patches and a couple of Sr202 kits?I understand not wanting crack users to access the free stuff but it seems like all the hassle just isn't worth your trouble.Sorry.
Nah, don't worry about it. Not a big deal.

The files are only protected to conserve bandwidth, which is a pretty expensive commodity. We have no way of knowing if someone is registering a cracked CM instrument or not, but so long as only people who have actually registered can access the files that's fine by us.

If we opened up the patches to all and sundry we'd get a massive bandwidth bill at the end of every month and have no database to use in future marketing.

Dave
Hi Dave

How much bandwidth do the monthly patches require?

If bandwidth is the only real issue then maybe we could host them for you. Email me if you are interested (alex@patcharena.com)

OT: did you guys all get the 128 CM-101 patches on this months CM coverdisk?

Which issue? In North America, we often get the issues 6 weeks late. My latest issue of CM is Winter
2003 Issue 66.

Sounds good. Can't understand CM's issue naming though. If they have a Winter issue, doesn't December qualify as part of winter? :? :? :?

They have the monthly issues which are published every 4 weeks, which makes 13 a year.

And they have the special issues which are published one for every season (i.e. 4 a year). So it sounds like you have the winter special issue :)

Sounds like a good way to get me to spend extra money. ;)

I'm looking forward to the PatchArena section of the CD. I'm sure it will save me lots of time that could be spent doing other things. Great exposure for your website, too! Good on ya.
