I started to fall into the trap of crushing all of the dynamics out of my effects with excessive compression, thinking no it's not loud enough it's not loud enough, despite having read extensively about the loudness war but I'm pulling away from that now. If I overuse an effect now it's probably Soundforge's Gapper snipper. It's such a tempting shortcut to making things sound dramatically different from how they sounded before. Trouble is it makes them sound dramatically different in the same way.

Lol and I think everyone should lay off autotune! :)

What is that? I've used SF for years and don't recall seeing it.

It's in the effects menue and has been in there package since at least 6.0. Basically it cuts chunks or inserts gaps of a predetermined length at a predetermined frequency out of or into your audio. At lower settings it works like a primative gating effect. At more extreme settings you can produce all kinds of gravley or metalic distortion. You can adjust the amount to which the edges of the gaps or snips are faded too. I go for the extreme mutilation settings. :)

Well, I've learned something new about SF after more than a decade of using it...and I don't think I'll be able to find a use for this particular effect. :hihi:

I'm always overusing something.

There was my backwards tape period, my varispeed tape period, my overoverdrive my amp period, my phase of running every single track through my sampler's filters, my Acoustic Mirror crazy impulse file era which morphed into my ReFX Trasher bit crushing year, the winter of my Discord...

This year so far, Voxengo Voxformer and Voxengo TransGainer, crush and pop.

Never say never. if there's a client you don't like whose business you don't particularly need, one slip of your finger and...oooops how did that happen? Well I thought you could have used sounding a bit grungier! :)

you can never have too much acoustic mirror or one of its equivalents!

As for a use of the gapper snipper tool, a legitimate use not likely to result in litegation, a bit on percussion might sound good if the wet and dry mix were right if you wanted to go for something a little different. One of its major drawbacks is that its not one of the effects for which SF permits automation.

Enhancement. Lethal because once you've overdone it, its very hard to take it off again.

Yeah, but that depends on knowing when it sounds right. :hihi:
perfect statement. imo that is the biggest problem for a lot mixing engineers/musicians/mastering engineers. problem is, if you tell'em, they mostly disagree ... :)

Of course they do. Which is why there's no right answer to these things. It may even change from one day to the next. "What was I thinking?!" :hihi:
