Halfwastedlove - Olikana

Cute disco? Poppy track. But felt like it was just beginning. Is this a finished track? Sometimes making music I get half way through a thing and can't break out of a 4 or 8 bar loop. Is that what happened here? I wanted it to be longer and I wanted something different to happen. Short-changed :[
that's why "half"...cos it's half finished ,not even...was a 2 hour job....but i will be takin the idea further and improve the track in comin weeks cos i think it got some potential.. and it's gonna be a song (with vocals).

Hi guys, despite being thrashed with all thats going on right now, just want to assure you I'm still looking in whenever I can, and just want to say thanks to all who have voted and added comments ... this is a great response for this stage in the comp, keep it going folks ... as I have said already, the tracks are fantastic .. I'll get my votes in soon :)

If you write feedback while you listen to the track, saves a lot of time and it's probably more useful for us.

@olikana : Aha. Don't forget to link to the finished or even 1st draft so we can see where you go with it.

Thanks for the votes, too.

Thanks Mr Blitz. A review of a review!!

If you (or anyone) gets to review my musical effort/s, really lay into them if you can. Dunno about you guys but I need feedback as I feel like I'm going round in circles. Without suggestions for ways forward, or someone identifying weak spots, I get bored with my own sound really quickly!

Rant Alert:

I think anything designed for a wider audience needs lots of input even if there's only one "creator." The worst type of criticism would have to be "That was great!" - What the hell can anyone do with that!? I know "stars" love to surround themselves with fawning sycophants, but surely it would be more useful to surround yourself with people who have differing and constructive points of view to your own - so that you can experiment, change and grow your musical toolbox? Thoughts?

You in this one Mac? We need some strange bent tunes to mix it up a bit. You're right. It is nice to hear "That was great!" I suppose that's feedback saying "You did good. I don't know what else to say."

Nope, unfortunately I haven't had time to take part in any OSC for quite a while (and I miss that), even if I do my best to listen and vote in all of them. Hopefully, I'll be back in the game soon :)
As to the "that was great" thing, seriously, I think it's nice now and then and when it's honest. Constructive criticism is very important in that it really helps you grow as a musician, but sometimes it's nice to just think "OK, this time I nailed it good" and feel fine about what you did, as opposed to constantly worrying over what you did wrong ;-)
It's also kind of rare to find objective criticism, as we all tend to point out things based on our personal taste rather than unbiased observation.
On the other hand, some people should probably listen to some criticism http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/48690
:hihi: :hihi:

(for the records: I honestly love this track! :-o )

Y'know if that were mixed a bit better - his weird accent might give this a cutesy curious aspect. It's a sad premise though. He's basically singing "I'm a consistent loser" - over and over.

Definitely the best individual song I've heard since Peter Bjorn & John's "Young Folks" (Writer's Block album).

Interesting that the "curious accent" thing didn't work so well for PBJ's next album (and yet it worked over and over for Astrud Gilberto).

It'd been a while since I last heard that one (found it on youtube now); it is a nice song, and they just indecisive and out of tune as the guy I linked, but it works (probably because of the mix, as you suggested)

I'm drowning in a sea of ignorance: who are these people? :help:

PBJ = Peter Bjorn & John :|

I just think that "young Folks" jagged it. Their latest album is on eMusic but they tried to change too much - taking themselves too seriously - losing all of their original "charm." I suspect their naivety of the English (speaking) musical scene and culture was why their album did so well. Then I guess they toured and learnt stuff like "You can't put those English words together" and it stuffed them. The naivety of that album was its engine.

I think sometimes we can "learn too much" in music.

True, and it goes for all forms of art, probably... retaining a certain amount of naivety is extremely difficult, but we should always try to.
Only if you have a few minutes to spare: I wrote this about this subject several years ago http://www.emportal.info/viewtopic.php?t=1544 not tremendously interesting, it's just what I think about it...

I've changed ideas many times about votes, 'cause the songs are all very well done and it's a pleasure to listen to the... but it's a contest so I have to choose and this is it:

10 yeager: 4 song at the price of 1 and all very nice

8 steplton: don't think it's deja vu and it's good and remarkable

6 mulperi: thrilling at the beginning and 80ies after that with a lot of melodies that make you feel good

Suggested synth: ultrasonique
