Why MS don't differentiate more between "easy" Home versions and performance- and configuration oriented Pro versions is beyond me, they are wasting a good chance here.

It similarly blows my mind to think that Microsoft really believes I want to have 5 thousand absolutely useless services and gizmos running in the background at all times so things look pretty. Horses for courses I suppose.

however I'm experiencing major issues with my recently acquired M-Audio ProFire 2626 and its drivers: the recording doesn't work (horrible gltiches and crackle (playback is fine, monitoring too), sounds like a clocking problem or some kind of a buffering issue, dunno. n

What FireWire driver do you have loaded? Have you tried the Legacy FireWire driver instead of the one that comes with the motherboard?

I've had no "issues" with win 7 (x64) as far as stability/ performance but I prefer vista 64 since I could configure it to be virtually indistinguishable from XP in appearance and navigation. I'm not a fan of any of the design changes in win 7 at all. That being said it's a perfectly acceptable OS and has been very stable. I'll still keep my main workstation running Vista until I get a new computer though.

Had no problem whatsoever for 8 months. Then about 2 weeks ago I turn on the PC one morning and it won't launch windows. Kept getting a message to "repair". Wouldn't work. Then I'd just get a black screen with the mouse cursor over it. Had to reinstall Windows 7 (64-bit). Now I have a disc image backup. Reinstalling and reauthorizing all my plugins was a pain. Aside from this one (rather major) incident, I am very happy with Windows 7. Fl Studio extended memory version works great. All plugins installed and work well (250+).

I just went through this last night and I almost had a heart attack. I had recovery discs made so it wasn't the end of the world, thank god...

The only real problems I ever had with Win7 x64 were problems I made myself. Disabling the wrong services, stuff like that. Otherwise: up and running since the beginning.

It's not gone.
Press ALT key in an open Explorer window, menu bar appears. Go to "Extras" -> "Folder options". At the bottom ... what do we see? Just check the upper box and you'll be fine.

True. With the new clickable Path bar at the top of the Explorer window, you can navigate 10 folders "up" with 1 click, exactly to the one you need.
Much more efficient.
Also, the BACKSPACE key will still do the trick.

ALT+Left Arrow and ALT+Right Arrow, by the way, have the same function as the Left/Right arrows in the upper left. Makes Explorer navigation on a keyboard lightning fast.

the scrolling start menu annoys the hell out of me even after a year

Ya well... put up with it. I personally am all in favor of the new start menu.
No scrolling through pages and pages of start menu folders.
I just hit the Windows key on my keyboard and start typing the name of the program, and there's the link to it. Hit Enter - done.

sometime(often) Explorer will lock you out of moving or deleting folders because it falsely claim to be open in another program(I've since learned it has to do with the stupid thumbnail caching)

Yup. I'm suffering from this as well. Just wait a while, then try again.
Or disable the Thumbnail Caching.

removing sharing on folder leaves you with an unremovable "lock" on the folder icon... Like I said, mostly small annoyances.

Windows 7 hes been great so far, just keep it updated. My biggest issue was getting the Mbox 2 to work on it and that was on avid's end who bought digidsign but it works great now even on my dual core pentium $350 junk build.

I haven't had easy changing. I have had to install Win7 (64-bit) many times again and again. Some programs seem to break my Win7 permanently so that the computer won't boot anymore (it freezes in the beginning where reads "Starting Windows", but the colour balls won't appear over it). Usually restore to last known working configuration works at the first time, but after the second boot, it wont work anymore, repair with recovery CD wont work, safe mode does not work, earlier restore points with recovery CD won't work, the only way to get system back working is to use a system image.

I have Win7 64-bit Ultimate with latest updates, Core2 Duo, Asus P5LD2 motherboard, Via firewire card, M-Audio FW 1814 interface, two 1TB SATA hard disks.

The first program that f**ked up the computer was Norton Ghost (every version, even the V15 that is claimed to be Win7 compatible), I got rid of it, and after that I noticed that AVG Antivirus also breaks the system in the exactly same way. After switching it to another antivirus (Avast) I got the system working, installed Live and did some composing, and it looked pretty good.

Then I installed Max for Live 5.1.7. (without backup as I was almost certain that a music program wont do anything in system level), and the computer got f**ked up again, in exactly same way, not going to even Safe mode !!!

Any other similar experiences? I think that the same think happened with Ghost even when I made a test installation of 32-bit Win 7. I wonder if it is the motherboard or chipset that does not have good enough compability with Win7, it is Intel 945P.

Or any other suggestions?
