Nice reviews Tattie and also general comment about the comp and your previous promise not to enter and then doing it anyway.. :hihi:

And yes, was thinking about your warning about fishing in a different part of the stream when hardly any tracks came in, but in the end a dozen entries is about the norm for a not-so-popular synth.

There are lessons to be learned though. Any synth might still be a popular fixture to the OSC, we were maybe a bit unlucky to have overcomplicated the rules with synth choice (it was supposed to be ANY synth after all) and changing them after opening, together with the oscillator waveform and bell sound requirement as some synths and composers maybe didn't gel with this.

But of course the main reason for the fewer-than-expected entries was that it happened during holidays, certainly is what prevented me from entering. (I would probably have used Predator btw)

I think the numbers vary for many reasons. I always maintain that 12 is ideal. it's roughly the number of tracks on a 45 minute album, and makes the judging more pleasurable in that there's enough variety, and not difficult to find the time to do.

Anyway .. I forgot to nominate a future synth .... And it will be a tribute to our football team, wonderfully transformed having played 4, won 3, drawn 1 since the new management arrived, still in both cups, winning 6-0 yesterday.
Aberdeen F.C. play in red and white, and if you mix these two colours ... you get ..... PINK :)

vanmorrison, I didnt think your track was bad ... but in a competition setting, things need to be measured by a standard/level dictated by that of the whole collection .... in terms of the criteria I use, we had a very strong pool.... and to fall short of the standard that was set is no real shame :)

Post

#tattie Don't think about it, man, I'm just a newbye and I just enjoy the possibility to understand something more (than the zero point where I started) havin' fun with the competition... so, every comment is appreciated... and we probably have radical different tastes in music... and that's a good thing.

vanmorrison ... :tu:

Sorry, not enough time to comment all those tracks... but I'd like to thank to you all who've done this work... that's amusing, ;)
Joining!!!

5 IIRs TubercularBells
4 Uiiuiiu&cubensick - Test of your mental strength
3 A journey to the Isles of Shubatiedoobop (RC1)
2 Yeager - I'm So Sorry
1 Tattiemannie - Sonic Syringe

And it'd be great to see Iblit or PolyIblit here...

Post

Cheers for the votes and synth nomination Wikter, Polyilbit is a really good freebie and can do some serious cool basses.

Will give my votes soon, and so far lit looks like I'll vote for either the new Tyrell if it's good and stable, SuperwaveP8 or the PolyIlbit.

Post

Don't dismiss Iblit, that altough monophonic has three oscillators to create chords...

Post

Oh, I too forgot to vote on a synth... i'll go with Peach from Tweakbench.

Post

My votes:

5 IIRs TubercularBells
4 A journey to the Isles of Shubatiedoobop
3 Uiiuiiu&cubensick - Test of your mental strength
2 Dwsel - Looking at bright city lights
1 Yeager - I'm So Sorry

I'm still deciding for the next synth. Anyway, u-he Tyrrel seems to be very promising.

EDIT: I gave a try to SuperwaveP8, as well. Thumbs up! :tu:
So Tyrrel can wait for OSC26 :)

wikter, bzur, ... cheers for the votes and the synth nominations :)

Just a reminder ... voters who nominate a synth can have a copy of Rezcho1 ... just PM me with an email addy, :)

V'ger .... I would be a happy bunny if we could do OSC with Superwave P8 ... I suspect it would be considered a wee bit heavy on CPU, but its a fine synth, well worth keeping the number of instances down :)

Post

I believe we're fast approaching the votes deadline :-o

Hey guys, finally home after extended leave. The old adage of "Away is Good But Home is Best" is so true..

So much one takes for granted at home, especially didn't know I would miss my good headphones so.

Anyway, will get those votes in before deadline.

About synth vote, I just tried Tyrell and that can't really be used yet it seems as I get massive CPU hit, anyone else with this?

How about SuperwaveP8? Working ok with average CPU usage here. Great sound though.

Most of all I would like an OSC with Voyager tho, but I guess too few days to lobby for a majority vote..

Missed this question before, just saw this as I was writing up the scores.

The reason the form voting was dropped was mostly to avoid people being overly influenced by the up-to-date scoreboard after reading several tests recently how other people's tastes is a very strong psychological force upon your own (sort of herd-mentality).

Sure, people can still see what others voted in the forum thread, but hopefully this effect is reduced.

Another reason for dropping the form voting was that there was always some confusion with it when a forum post had to go along with clicking in the form..

Top 5 :

1. Yeager - I'm So Sorry 5pst

Nice energy through the track, clear structure and great movement that keeps things interesting. One fault though, the saw lead is way too compressed thus drowning everything under it when it surfaces and the sound itself could have used more heavy hand with EQ.

2. Tattiemannie - Sonic Syringe 4pst

Love the craziness and the organized chaos. Very melodic. Although sometimes less is more and in the chaos there could be bit more clarity sound wise.

3. Archon1024 - Village in the Snow Globe 3pst

Well captured holiday atmosphere piece.

4. IIRs - TubercularBells 2pst

Rolls along nicely, nice sounds and nice bell riff as the driving force in the background.

5. Lunatic_Machinist - Another day's another end 1pst

Few strong ideas in there, although execution wise doesn't quite deliver. Still fun jam type of song that works for me.

Disclaimer: no offence intended in anyway to anybody in the ( very ) short reviews.

If I have the time I'll include little more in depth reviews later. :)

Ps. Almost forgot, SuperwaveP8 synth suggestion seconded by me.

Late as ever, my reviews/thoughts:

A Journey - Radio tuning, song starts (for me) at 1:49, great harpy/pluck sound(s), great backing rhythm. The birds, and water, and distant harp part at 3:26 reminds me of Andreas Vollenweider, bass at 4:02 is lovely. Great main theme, maybe just a bit too long.

Snowglobe - Bells, sleighbells and more bells, very Xmassy, a pleasure to listen to.

MenAce - Solid sounds, driving rhythm nice change at 2:20 lots of details, and a subtle high hat, great production.

Bright City - Distant percussion, wow! at 1:05 and again at 3:00 , has an eastern feeling to me, great ambient sounds.

Tubercular - Oldfield meets mr. Ozzio, almost a cover, love the stuttery bass, plucky backings, and gated strings. Solid production.

Tibet - Piano/delay and bassline work well together, could use more accompaniment in the rhythm section, could also be longer.

Wall - Nice lead (sound and melody) rhythmic bass/gate is also very good. Too short.

Curves - Very coherent, the mix is so "out there" , I love it, gave me the feeling of "WTF did I just listen to ?", and wanted to listen again. But then again I love the Residents, with ALL their twelve tone scales.

Sonic - Wild and weird, great drums and percussion, solid bass. Lots and lots of nice melodies, great full track. Well done !

Mental - Reggae, neurotic. Love ALL the sounds, drums are very nice, great wobbly bass, it even has bells. I like what happened at 1:20 (the suck and push). Great production.

Another day - Organic beginning, feels quite unquantized. Basssound is good. The sitar/bell duet is really nice.

The points :

Sonic - 5 points
MenAce - 4 points
Journey - 3 points
Tubercular - 2 points
Mental - 1 point.

Great job everyone, and even though we (almost) all used different synths, I think the bell-theme somehow made this an equal challenge.

P.S I wish I could write reviews like some of you can (I really enjoy reading all of them). But then again I'm a lover not a writer. 8)

Synth suggestion SuperwaveP8.
