Yes. It was almost obsolete as soon as it came out! Real shame because it's a great idea. I guess for an ipad 2 the best method of connectivity is still the camera connection kit with a driveless MIDI or audio interface. Still seems a bit daft to me that Apple didn't furnish this with at least one USB port. Oh well. Maybe someone will come up with a more universal I/O device for the ipad. But after Alesis' brave but ultimately failed attempt it seems unlikelypolaris20 wrote:I figured this would happen, because you can't count on the shape of the iPad remaining constant, whereas the dock connector will remain the same, most likely. Alesis should have just come out with a dock-connecting interface with the same IO, but in a box to cable format.

Apogee is on the right track with its JAM and MIKE products, both of which connect via cable and work with either dock connector or USB (for Mac). They seem to be sticking with relatively simple devices thus far though, nothing with the IO that the Alesis had/has.Dogboy73 wrote:Yes. It was almost obsolete as soon as it came out! The AKAI ipad Keystation 49 looks pretty good. Only has stereo outputs & USB connectivity though. On the plus side it's very affordable. If it had more comprehensive I/O, maybe a little extra cost, it would be spot on. Again though, I'm not sure how the ipad dock works for ipad 2. It might be a similar story as with the Alesis I/O dock

That's clever because the I/O dock was announced BEFORE Apple announced the ipad 2. How did Alesis know!?tq wrote:Just a little update: The Alesis website claims that Alesis I/O will be "for ipad & ipad 2"...

Well it seems to be enclosed on 3 sides so it still looks quite secure to me:

its' not like it's being held upright or something

Just had a look on the Alesis website. They are indeed quite specific about it working with ipad 1 & ipad 2. I also watched part of this video on Youtube where one guy saus that apparently Alesis delayed the release of this in order to adapt it for ipad 2, which apparently didn't work with the I/O dock at first.
(info around 8:15 minutes in)
Has the Alesis I/O dock been released yet? I got the impression it was out following the reply I got from Digital Village asking if it worked with ipad 2.
EDIT:I found a couple of music equipment sites that have it down for a July release.
