You have a pure gate mode (EXP at 0% or unlimited if I see that right), or an expander mode (EXP variable). It also offers a range mode, where the signal is being attenuated if it goes below the threshold. Though I do miss a hysteresis control.
Together with the tilt filter within the sc I find this a very nasty gate/exp :D One could ask Herbert about a hysteresis control.

Nah, my comparison was not so much from the technical side but from what I use it for - mainly breakbeats and sound design as I do not record very often...not yet... Apart from that you're certainly right.
Compyfox wrote:I think you can simply forget Floorfish in this case. It's discontinued and is really just a basic gate/expander compared to the other two solutions.
Yes of course, the fishfillets are sooooo old gems. Tbh I am a bit err...romantic when it comes to these. Always loved their sound and they've been around since I started making music itb

As much as I like them myself, I had to ditch them eventually. Sascha Eversmeier ported at least some of them over to the Analog Modeling Suite from Magix - so this is the only way to still use "them".

I browsed through the "gate" database yesterday just out of curiosity.

Apart from Pro-G and a handful of other (very pricey) commercial solutions (not counting the once great Kjaerhus), there is barely any freeware gate that can do as much as preFIX does.

reaGate is just a normal gate, so is G-Gate (which is the most simplest I once used), SlimSlowSlider is a bit... old (but the most extensive gate/expander I've seen and used), the rest... barely any competition.

Aside from using gates in a guitar software bundle, maybe this one here (preFix) will supersede the ones I used so far.

Bootsie your a very generous person indeed! Thank you! Now I just really have to figure out how to use it. Most things here are new to me. :)

No. :hihi:

But here is a real world example :
Guitar recording
- using two mics with varying distances on a source inevitably results in phase issues, making your signal weaker than necessary.
- What I do is record both mics to a single stereo track to facilitate editing and overdubbing, and then use the phase alignment in PreFix set to treat one side only to get the mics in phase.
No more trial and error with mic positioning for hours, place each mic where it sounds best and adjust phase comfortably later.

Only one application out of many ...

Gotta say, the gate in this thing is incredible! I was not a fan of Nasty VCS (didn't like the limiter OR the compressor) but put it after this new fella and WHOA! they make a great team. Gonna play with it all night: the parameter ranges deliver such punch and clarity that it makes me want to remix all my stuff. Haven't enjoyed new FX so much for a long time.

Bootsie Rules, OK!

p.s. I still don't like the limiter in Nasty VCS.....

preFix is great!

while i'm not used to "play" with the phase and i'm not sure yet whether I as a bedroomproducer will make heavy use of it -

but:
the lowpass/highpass filters and the whole eq section sound so great, so smooth!

Also the gate: you can set it up perfectly to your individual desires - its so very flexible!

The GUI once again is so very userfriendly and clear!

Thats a great plugin - thanks to bootsy/varosound for creating it and making it available for free!

what are you using for compression then?

Would you accept lookahead/latency for a better limiter performance in such a plug-in?

Thanks Bootsie for a great plugin!

re: Nasty VCS, yes, I personally would be happy to accept some latency in exchange for a more effective limiter, although that's not really my problem.

I think I just prefer other ways of controlling compression and limiting: it has more to do with the way my mind (allegedly) works than any failing in your plugin. I just can't seem to shut my eyes and focus in on the effect my adjustments are having. Don't waste another second on this - I should have said '...the limiter in Nasty VCS doesn't suit me...'. My lack of enthusiasm for the compressor in Nasty VCS has tempered somewhat since I tried it in combo with Prefix. They sing together.

Keep up the great work, mate!

I'm really happy that lots of gents realized the fine quality of the filter section. If it had been made by some commercial companies they would have bombed you already with tons of marketing BS just about this one :hihi:

All in all I expect that lots of people will find their very own use for preFIX over the time beside its original purpose and I really like that idea ...
