no, only on the masterbus. though every rule has its exeption of course... ;)

well, when i.e. using a splitband solution, to make the lower band mono, there's a crossover in the filter, which doesn't have a perfect flat response in frequency (at least i've yet to find one that does). there's 2 small peaks and one dip at the crossover... that's why i prefer the ms eq solutíon...

You might also want to give a try to Blue Cat's MB-7 Mixer: it will let you do this among many other spectral manipulations. Just set up two bands, and you can then choose to reduce the stereo spread of the lower band (down to 0% if you want true mono).

Once you are used to the tool, you can apply further stereo processing to other parts of the spectrum and very quickly control your stereo response accross the entire spectrum.

That's exactly what I do for Vinyl mastering. Any mid/side or left/right independent EQ with a hpf will do it (you can use Voxengo MSED to make any left/right EQ work).
