I definitely would! Thanks for your work.droopy6 wrote:Does anyone is interesting in adding the equivalent of mediabay in Universal Patch Finder ? Basically, it could be faster and you could import your mediabay database of course. But you wont have all functionalities of mediabay.

This is valuable information, I checked the Sample Librarian manual + presentation, seems rather well made and useful app. But this one, like every organizer I've seen, lack the following features which could make our life much easier:tungsten carbide wrote:I just got done doing a lot of search / evaluation covering most of the products on CC4's post, and my conclusion is the only viable solution for Windows users is Sample Librarian by RyAudio.com (I paid $40 for it, which is a reasonable value).

- possibility for engine (automated) tagging
- possibility for intelligent sound recognition
If you have, lets say 10.000+ samples (which is not nowdays very unusual),
tagging each (or most) of the samples manually takes time and patienty.
Manual tagging option is of course a must, but "the first round robust tagging" could be done by the engine according to the sample character indentification and based on classifaction algorithm. The user could then complement in the long run the engine suggested tagging.
On the other hand, it should be possible to include intelligent sound type recognition to the present organiziers, see example those "name my tune" -type of applications (http://www.namemytune.com/) which can be found several in the market. You could hum the pattern or the play the similar "sound color" which you are looking after in your databe.
I think that we have a right to expect much more sophisticated sound file organizers in the near future (if the developers are awake).

there's some pretty sophisticated software for organizing music databases; no one seems to have it quite right for sound sample management.Harry_HH wrote:I think that we have a right to expect much more sophisticated sound file organizers in the near future (if the developers are awake).Harry

Someone have already reach me to talk about this. This guy seems to know how to do automatic audio classification. Well, for the moment, I will work on mediabay only, but the next step will be this topic, certainly.

here where Am I:

I successfully imported mediabay in my own database, converting it to
a more efficient design. Now I'm able to display the attributes with
their known values.
Right now, attribute like "Character" are no longer constraint to
18 fixed values. Everything will be "open".
(my screenshot don't show all values because I work on smaller model)
Mediabay entries will appear in a library named MediaBay in Universal Patch
Finder.
next step: search with what is selected.

I need a big mediabay database which is slow to use. does anybody can send me this by ftp ? basically I will convert it to my new database scheme to see if
the performances are better. Of course I also need a typical query causing mediabay to be slow like hell.
please PM.
thanks.

Just to be clear is tagging applicable at folder level only not at the file level (WAV)? What I want to do is tag all my kicks, snares, hats and so on so forth. Please note these can be scattered around in multiple folders. When I search for Kicks or select the tag Kick, it should display me all the kicks irrespective of the folders they are in. Is this possible in the current version of UPF?

Does the Universal Patch Finder have any additional features that the Sample Librarian doesn't have? Because I'm thinking about buying the Sample Librarian, but maybe the Universal Patch Finder has some advantages?

Wow Universal Patch Finder is really great, grats on your work and thanks for making it free, been looking for something like this. The speed with which it builds the database and does searches is very good, you really got that done properly.
Just the fact that it remembers where I was in a library next time the GUI is opened is very useful, as is the rating.
Of course not so nice to install 30MB of .NET to run it, and I have a really bad graphics bug where the whole GUI sometimes is blank when I recall it, until I click somewhere on it and it comes back bit by bit (where I click).
And I can't drag files onto Shortcircuit 1, it is not allowed (works well for Shortcircuit 2 and others.
Shouldn't Universal Patch Finder really have its own thread?

That would be great. I can wait for the next release. Tagging at the file level is very important to me. Please keep in mind tagging of multiple of files at one go would be great as well.droopy6 wrote:in the current version(1.1) yes.Just to be clear is tagging applicable at folder level only not at the file level (WAV)?

Yeah, it probably should now... I'm interested in watching its development.V'ger wrote:Shouldn't Universal Patch Finder really have its own thread?
Other Options?
I thought I'd share a few other options for sample organization I've found since Sample Catalog, my favorite, is showing its age...
There are media players and taggers that some may find have the capability to help them organize their samples. I didn't add any them to the list at the beginning of the thread, but would if anyone thinks they're helpful. For example, I've often heard of people here on KVR stating they use iTunes to organize loops & samples. foobar2000 also has the capability to add advanced & custom tags, plus you can personalize the interface. Personally I'm finding Music Bee a decent alternative media player for sample organization. It's very easy to setup its ten custom fields for organization plus it's simple to configure the preferences to do things like not write those fields to the actual file.
The Musichi Suite (19€-49€) website says it allows "for one more level of grouping... for a musician a library for sound samples..."
...And SoundTorch might be useful for looking for a unique way to browse through samples.

Hi droopy6,
I am very interested in your Universal Patch Finder as it looks very useful.
Unfortunately however, there are a couple of deal-breakers that prevent me from even getting off the ground with this thing.
1. The window can't be fully maximised and there is no scroll bars either. This means that the whole bottom section is cut off on my 15" screen and I can't see any of the files listed.
2. It crashes in my host (Brainspawn forte), when used as a VST. It doesn't crash Forte however, just UPF.
EDIT:
Here's a little more info...
Win 7 x64 Pro
Brainspawn Forte 3 x64
Oh well.

Oh well.
My main tools: Kontakt, Omnisphere, Samplemodeling + Audio Modeling. Unify = godsend. Tari's libraries also rock.

I created a dedicated thread here:

the VST version use the screen size, the standalone version can be resized vertically.
I think it can't be used as VST
thanks ! I hope next release should be faster.

Hi guys,Aural Probe developer Michael Davies (aka. Butter Party for my productions) here.
I've just put out a new version of Aural Probe that fixes a lot of stability issues, tested with Win XP/7/8. If you're still looking for a sample manager/librarian/organiser, please take a look: http://auralprobe.sourceforge.net (http://auralprobe.sourceforge.net)
I'm always happy to get feedback from others on what could be improved, from simple suggestions to complex feature additions.
Cheers!
Michael
