Wow. The mixes of this version and your earlier one are very different. This one feels like I'm sitting a lot closer to the musicians/instruments. It's like the two versions were mic'ed differently.

But one thing is for certain, both versions sound beautiful. I love your compositions. More, more!

I really like The Lost Autumn. The melodic lines are Guzheng and Pipa, right? There is a nice intensity to this musical piece.

Guzheng come from Logic Pro/World jam pack. The sound of pipa is actually Ruan that come from Logic Pro too/World jam pack. The rest come from Kontakt 4.0.

Thanks! The difference is because I used a different setting in reverb between Solo strings 1 and 2 and I also did some stage backward mix in the previous version. So much possibilities...

I really love Solo Strings 2, there is so much control on every little aspect, especially all the articulations. A great improvement!

BTW I really have to force myself to let some lines almost disappear in the mix... I am used to trying to get every instrument noticed, but that doesn't seem to work that way with classical stuff. It's a shame because there are some fine lines that you can hardly hear... But well, with classical pieces I suppose it's all about the total impression and sound and overall feel and not each and every line.

Wow... that's awesome! Beautiful! Love it! I bought CSII because I was looking for a string orchestra, but since you started posting your quartets, I am falling in love with string quartets! I made my first quartet after listening to your previous mp3's and this one really got me hooked on quartets! Absolutely great piece!!!

I wonder what reverb you use: only the reverb that comes with KH? If so, what setting? I am used to drowning my pieces in large halls, but your pieces sound very close but too close. And I am also afraid of letting players stop a note/bow just like that because I have the idea violins should sort of fade away, but you don't do that all the time and it sure sounds great nonetheless! Pity I don't have Logic because I'd love to look at one of your projects in my DAW...

In short: thanks for posting this beautiful and very inspiring piece!

P.S. Any reason why you keep all players in the middle? I usually listen with a headphone but I played this one over my speakers: it sounded great (as I said) and I didn't notice the players weren't 'spaced out in stereo', but when I listened to it on my headphones I noticed everything was completely centered. Do you have a particular reason for that?

Hi! Thanks for the compliment! I am using the HallVol3 reverb settings for all the instruments in Solo Strings 2.
I like to put the strings in the middle because after all, it is a string quartet and they aren't spread on a concert floor either. I spread them with a value of 9 from each other in the the mixer. I had them wide spread before but at some point I really started to doubt about this. Listening to Beethoven string quartets a lot, I started to place the instruments as I heard them. For me, this feels pretty close to a real recording.

Just a note. I realize this is generally understood, but it never hurts to say it.

As this is a Kirk Hunter Studios Customer Demo contest it is intended to show what actual users can do with Kirk Hunter Studios libraries. Consequently, to be considered, entries must contain Kirk Hunter Studios orchestral libraries and NOT mix them with other developers libraries.

Consequently, for all entrants in this contest, please use ONLY Kirk Hunter Studios libraries for strings, brass and woodwinds and don't mix in other developers libraries for these areas.

You can use other developers sample libraries for piano, percussion (both areas where Kirk Hunter Studios does have libraries, but it's significantly less confusing to the average visitor than mixing and matching Kirk Hunter Studios and other developers string, brass and woodwind libraries), organ, guitar, bass and any other category of instrument sample libraries where no Kirk Hunter Studios library exists and you may also add live instruments. If you go this route, it would be useful for listeners if you list all of the libraries and live instruments you used in your submission.

To use an analogy, imagine if ToonTrack, maker of Superior Drummer 2, had a customer demo contest for their Superior Drummer 2 VST and I entered the contest with a demo that featured Superior Drummer 2 for all bass drum, snare drums and tom parts BUT I used BFD for the hi hats and cymbals. It really wouldn't make for an appropriate demo of Superior Drummer 2. Besides not being a great illustration of what can be done with Superior Drummer, it would confuse a lot of people who would be likely to attribute the hi hat and cymbal samples to Superior Drummer instead of BFD.

Here is a short piece I did with Diamond.

I was trying for something that started small, and ended big. I find that Diamond can do both quite well (even for a hobbyist like me). I wanted to get the woodwinds in there, as I like them but they don't seem to get mentioned much.

It's all KH except for the cymbal (GPO) and background choir (Omnisphere).

I noticed you use Sonar 8.5? I use it too, the producer version.
In logic the DirMix that is used in André Van Haren's demos, can perfectly be replaced by Sonar's channel tools. All it has to do is power panning and channel tools does that easily, and much more if you want to. If you want some help, pm me (in dutch
