I believe in the past they built really good quality.
I am not sure what year the bass is from, I think my friend bought it new sometime around 1999/2000. I have a mid 90's Japan made Squire Strat guitar that plays and sounds awesome though. Every time I play it through a different rig, it makes me not want to spend money to get a pricey Fender American made strat :shrug:

My bass actually plays pretty well, and has a very decent neck on it. My main complaint is the stock pickups.

I had an '88 Squire Strat. Not bad, really. Neck felt good, pickups were ok. I seem to recall getting it new for $200 from Guitar Center.

Great plug :)

It's not so suited to the Dub Reggae though unfortunately...
