You can also perfectly replicate that patch and any DX7 patch using the Nord G2 Modular, there is a free converter available and the G2 has all the modules needed to recreate it.

Do you have the sysex for that? Let me see if the G2 can recreate it

My closest attempt with FM8 so far is a preset called "Rhodes A1" in the "Rhodes1.syx" file contained in the "SYX files" download here:
http://homepages.abdn.ac.uk/mth192/pages/html/dx7.html

To this i added the Dimension D Chorus from Empty Room Systems and the free TAL Reverb 2.
You could also try using 8 instances like in the original synth but a Chorus and Reverb seem to deliver the same if not even a better result.
In fact the detuning of the 8 units in the original synth seems to emulate a chorus and the panning is like a Stereo Spread which usually could be done with a Reverb and/or some Chorus FXs. The Dimension D Chorus got a beautiful Stereo widening effect too.

I know - I was just suggesting it as possibly an alternative for people considering buying an actual DX hardware unit. The G2 has very comprehensive and flexible DX support, you can not only replicate the classic DX (including with patch import via a third party programme) but also build much more complex FM based and hybrid synths, as well as so much more (VA, additive, FX etc) and second hand Engine versions maybe affordable.

Cheaper than the TX 816:

Or here 399$ for the rack and 129$ for 1 module:

I thought about purchasing a DX plugin board (i could use 3 of those at once) for my Motif ES 7 but the prices are insane:

Bloody hell! That's a lot more than I paid for mine when it was new.

could you explain that a bit; all i can find out about the Tx-802 is that it's 8 part multitimbral with 16 voices. Hardly 6 DX7's, but if what you say is true, there's several on ebay going cheap right now, might pick one up myself.
Sorry about that - it's 16-voice, but 8-part multitimbral, whereas the DX7 was originally monotimbral then bitimbral. I only use it in bitimbral mode at most in sequences. Anyway, the multitibrality is practical for sequences, you just need a software editor. I recommend DX Manager 3...cheap but does what you need for the most part - manage patches and light editing.

The sysex patches are available all over the Internet, so many that it can be hard to locate a rarer patch, but that one is the easiest of all to find.

I have used both FM7 and FM8 for a long time, importing patches, tweaking, and I've never been able to come even close to the high-end bite the originals had. FM8 is great for what it can do, but it sounds very different than the TXs and DXs. The FM synths sound dull in comparison. The DX / TX patches can have so much high end that I have to limit the midi velocity going in to get the sound I want, then it's still got more high end than FM8.

Here's the sound of my TX-802 (Jazz Guitar) with velocity severely toned down (starts at 49 seconds) and a bit o' flange (cannot get this sound with FM8):

eh, someday I'll hook my tg77 and dx7mk1 up and do a comparison with fm8 and fmheaven.

The early DX7's only transmitted a velocity value up to 100 so many of the older patches can easily be over driven by higher velocities. It was a problem when I used my ESQ-1 as a master keyboard to control the DX, as the DX could receive up to the full 127. The FM8 has a switch in the Options menu to select Standard or DX keyboard response.

I imported that DX Rhodes patch into FM Heaven today and I liked the results better than the FM8. (to be honest I've always hated that DX electric piano sound :hihi: )

I still have my DX7/IIFD, but i was playing once on my friend
TX816, and he managed to put together that big David Foster
kind of sound.

It was incredible, velo sensitive, punchy and shiny - i'll never forget. It was 4 different patch, 2 of them was soft, detuned, one "normal" and the 4th module just played some high tine bells.
NO FX on it! Just detune and panorama.

As i was looking after some sysex files, i found a patch
called Grusin Piano. That was the nearest single preset
what i liked after this TX816 monster.

Now i'm happy as i was able to remake it in Zebra and it's convincing enough.
(This is the only one piano kind of sound in Padsheaven)

I also feel that Fm7 and Fm8 are much thinner than the real thing. But i hope with Zebra3, will be much better in the FM part too.

When I first started using ACE, I made a few simple DX style sounds and they had so much more life than FM8... that was when I decided to take FM8 off my computer. I am not suggesting ACE as a substitute, but it showed me a vibrant sound that I wished for... I'll wait for an FM synth that has such a sound.

Urs has hinted about a digital synth in the vein of DIVA that may contain Yamaha style FM and I think Casio style PD (I guess it's completely up in the air atm and as with anything in its design stage may never see the light of day or may be a completely different beast once it's set free.. but it's still inspiring)
